CPW freebies?

I was just wondering if we get any free things (besides food...and tons of fun) at cpw? such as a mit shirt? just for coming?

You won't get any freebies from "MIT" as an entity, but there will be TONS of free stuff given out by various living groups, clubs, majors, etc etc etc

Go to the Activities Midway, the Academic Fair, and the different dorms, and you will get free: shirts, frisbees, beach balls, bottle openers, and a multitude of other free crap that you think is cool at the time but will never use and then will eventually throw out when you're finally moving out of your dorm at the end of senior year. =)

(Okay, I take that back- the Libraries totally give out free keychain levels, which I have totally used on numerous occasions. I suppose some other stuff might be useful too...)

You'll also get a card with Techcash on it equal to your year (it was $20.11 when my daughter went last year). Since you'll basically be eating free food at CPW, spend some of this at the COOP. :-)

Can I dare ask where said schedule for this event is posted, and whether anything on it would be interesting/appropriate/allowable for an incoming grad student to mooch off of (okay, okay, I visited last Friday, but if someone's passing off 10% off coupons for MIT gear, I would be happy).

Wait, so we can use Techcash at the Coop???!

yeah...can we use it at the Coop? That would be fantastic if we could...!

yeah! same question... cuz like i got like $10 on the caltech card thing they gave for their prefrosh weekend and never used it....
i could have bought the " MIT- Because not everyone can go to caltech"
and change the "can" to "want to".... or as a friend suggested... ducttape the "not" part... since every year, more people get into caltech from my school than into MIT and.... well sure their class size is smaller, but 1.5x admission rate.

I really want an MIT sweatshirt!! and my parents would be a lot happier if it were cheaper!

wait, there was money on the caltech card?!?!?? I TOTALLY DIDN'T KNOW THAT. lol

yes it was $9.99. my friend used it to make copies in their library for his AP lit research paper.... and YES he made about 80 sheets of copied stuff. The paper is due for him before MIT CPW... and it is 25% of his grade.... so I hope he finishes it on time....

Hmm, actually, I don't think you can use the card at the Coop. I believe this is a recent development.

The money on the card, as far as I know, is in "Dining Dollars," which means it can only be spent at dining halls, LaVerdes (the convenience store), and other food places that accept Tech cash (meaning places in the student center that you might not consider a dining hall at first glance- there's usually a sign somewhere that says "we accept dining dollars.")

If we don't use the money on the card now, will it still be good in the fall?

No, from what I'm told, it won't be. Money you don't spend disappears (the Institute takes it). Before you leave, give your card to your host so he can buy some sour candies with it or something.

so...no apparel purchasing with the card...but junk food gets the green light? lol
although the former would have been neater, I can live with the latter

Wait!
<a href="http://web.mit.edu/mitcard/techcash/locations.html%5B/url%5D">http://web.mit.edu/mitcard/techcash/locations.html</a>
does this mean that techcash can be used at the coop...or the coop is just a location where techcash can be purchased?
and...here too! <a href="http://store.thecoop.com/coopstore/estore_aboutus.jsp%5B/url%5D">http://store.thecoop.com/coopstore/estore_aboutus.jsp</a>
but...just wondering...can we buy anything harvard with our techcash?

TechCash can be used at the Coop.

What Laura is saying is that the money on the card is in Dining Dollars, which is not accepted at the Coop. Dining Dollars can only be used at exclusively dining establishments.

The Card Services website says[/url</a>]
We offer two different debit accounts for students to choose from. The TechCASH account can be used to purchase goods and services at all locations that accept TechCASH. Funds are deposited into a students account for purchases using the MIT ID Card.

The other student debit account is called Dining Dollars. This account is valid at those merchants that sell food products exclusively.

(The bottom line you should take away here is that when you come to MIT, you should have your parents put all of your dining money in TechCash and not Dining Dollars, because the entire concept of Dining Dollars is stupid.)

Well, during CPW, does MIT give us TechCash or Dining Dollars? I hope TechCash, I really want an MIT shirt!!

Mollieb, thanks for that clarification. I was looking at the dining plan stuff and wondering why someone wouldn't just put everything on a TechCash card...

Lol, so we CAN buy candy/energy drinks with it, then? =P

I hope its tech cash..otherwise i'm bring back a buttload of candy :P

Yes, you can buy all the unhealthy food your heart desires. :D It just has to be technically edible.

And CountingDown, I would definitely recommend putting money solely in Tech Cash, unless your kid has some pre-existing budgetary problem and you're concerned that he'll fritter away his food money on books or something.
