CR help..........

i have a serious problem with CR questions.
sentence completion questions are easy. usually 17+/19.
but i have a lot of trouble with passage-based questions. it's either running out of time or not getting what the author is saying.
what should i do?

my current score (pretty consistent):
verbal: 600-640 :usually somewhere around 600
math and writing: 700-800. :low 700s right now.

yeaaaah i'm in the exact same boat as you... low 700's on math and writing, and low-mid 600's in reading. I do great on sentence completions as well, but I just seem to overanalyze and never have time to finish... so....

bump?

I have the same problem with CR. STuck with a 680 as of now.

CR is too freakin subjective. A lot of times, there is more than one choice that can be arguably the answer.

read the entire passages.

As for getting more time, skip around if you are not a fast reader or can't concentrate on waht the passage is saying. If you read the whole passage might be worse b/c unless you are really skilled at picking out which info you need and don't need, you could have even LESS time.

As for comprehension, what helped me was that for line reference questions I read more before and after the line. Like I would read 2 lines b4 and 2 lines after, and note which paragraph the sentence is in. That usually helped me get the "big picture" ideas and "what does the author think" questions.

But I am not an expert at it either---- I am stuck knee deep in the low 600's.

Good luck

Its a BIG misconception that reading the passages wastes time that could be better spent 'looking for the answers.' I'm an extremely slow reader and i have a lot more time left at the end when i read the passages and answer the questions, rather than when i just try and look for the answers. Reading takes few minutes even for he slowest readers(we're not talking ten pages of text-both passages cover like two pages). You need to read the passages thoroughly, then read the questions and look for the answers. I went from a 55/67 raw score to a 65/67 in practice tests that i took. Try it if you guys dont believe me....

Underline the main ideas as you read. Also, I think it helps to preview at least some of the questions before reading so you have some objective; otherwise, some of those passages can be a pain to struggle through. Another thing I found when I took the test was that answers with loaded language or broad generalizations were wrong. Sorry this is a little disjointed, but these things worked for me. The best way is to do a lot of practice with different techniques and then to find what works for YOU.
