pg82 question 18
Still, the officials werent clever enough, or suspicious enouigh, to check my sister and me-lucky for us。。。。。。。。。。。

question:the authors descripotion of the custuoms police suggests that the author gviews them with?
a。alarm
b。skepticism
c。disrespect
d。caution
e。paranoia

answer: C

why C i would choose caution over skepicism
the girl was going through the customer when emigrating to Canada, i thought she would be at least be nervous
or if she feels hatred against the police, it would be skepicism to doubt their ability more than disrespect。。

thanks a lot

The officials weren't clever enough....that alone depicts the author's disrespect toward the officials.

Skepticism is a doubting/questioning state of mind. The girl is not doubting their ability; she is simply abasing the officials.

When answering CR questions, don't think too hard and make your own theories of how the author should be feeling unless stated conspicuously. For instance, you are speculating that the girl would be at least nervous. In the passage, the girl is overwhelmed by the thought of departure and no where does it state that she is nervous about the officials.

any one more question,
i always get one or two errors from each section of CR. it really irritates me because i know it is due to my carelessness. and if i am in my right mind, i would get them 99 percent right. i believe it could be avoided but i don't know how. there are six weeks still and what should i do to improve?
a teacher teaching TOEFL told me that she would not eat until get it all right.....(well, starvation never works well for my brain either...)

so any help??
thx a lot~

Always before starting the test, you need to relax. Inhale and exhale slowly, until you can feel your heartbeat slow down to a rate almost close to sleeping. By relaxing, you lower your brain waves which make test-taking much more effective.

Other than that, I'd do more practice questions until you don't get any error on a practice test. Not eating is a terrible idea. There is no point in sabotaging your brain when you are in need for its maximized function. You wouldn't stab your legs to do play sports better, would you? =P

Good luck!

on the practice questions, do you use any other book other than the blue official? i know this is an out fashion question but using Barron and Kaplan just dont give me the same feeling of using Official guide, maybe it is my illusion?

pg 607 One turned around and saw the real sea, so miraculously real that it startled.
it make human startled ? or it----one startled?

pg 608
this line of thought is an anarchronism, rendered obsolete by its own success

i don't really get what this mean. Could somebody explain it to me? does it mean even the success occurred, it is rendered by obsolete becuz the polictical reason?

8.Both the passage emphasize on which aspect of its work
A. the extent to which it contributed to natural science
B. the way in which it limits present day science

since it is being emphasized, won't it suppose to be the main point of the passage which is the itemizing limits the seeing and apprehending of the science?

pg 616
The skepticism of some acient philosophers _and hellps to elucidate varieties of niilism that appeared in the early 19th century.

the answer is foreshadow.
then what does the sentence mean? does it mean the skepticism forshadows nihilism and elucidate nihilism?
but it doesn't really make any sense
why from elucidate we can infer the word forshadow?
what about dissemate?
if using this word, it would be the skepticism helps the growth of nihilism , still , won't it make much more senses?

pg 607
I think it means it startled the human.

pg 608
I think it means that because of Western world's success so far despite these negative thoughts of environmental destruction, the line of thought is invalid and unsuitable for the present.

pg 589
It's just that in the first passage, there is no explicit claim that Linnaeus's work is limiting present-day science. All it says in the passage is that for the next hundred years since Linnaeus, many scientists devoted their work to classification only. Linnaeus lived in the 18th century, which means "the next hundred years" only shows the negative effect of the classification system up until 1800s.

p616
I don't get what it's supposed to mean either, but I actually would pick foreshadows anyway, because other words simply won't make sense.
