I didn't want to hijack the other thread, so...

I'm getting 700-750 in Math and high 600s to 750s in Writing. I got a 680 in CR, and what should I read over the summer to increase my CR score to 750+ I've been reading a chapter of the Direct Hits (both volumes) everyday for a month to 6 weeks. I miss maybe 2 or 3 vocab every test. I usually miss like 5-6 on passage based reading; all the sections combined. I am using noitaraperp's method for CR. Is there any way to improve other than just waiting for aging?(im a freshman)

If possible, I'd like a list of novels to increase my score.

So far I am thinking of: The Great Gatsby, Wuthering Heights, Great Expectations

In my view, the best thing you can do is to read as many books as possible. Your three choices are wonderful! To that list, I would add Jane Eyre, The Lord of the Rings, Lord of the Flies, anything by Austen, etc.

But you don’t have to read only the classics. I think that you should look for books that you genuinely want to read and enjoy. If you like mysteries, find some excellent mystery authors. Or if you enjoy fantasy, explore in that direction. Cultivating the habit of reading will help you more than anything else in your academic pursuits.

Dude, read some fun books!

I recomend (as a first time 800), the Ender’s Game series, Airborn by kenneth Oppel, Artemis Fowl series, montmorency (iffy), septimus heap (probably a bit young), any magazine you can find (like Time or Newsweek). Maybe Jules Verne (20,000 leagues) or Sherlock Holmes. Or maybe Peter Hamiliton (pandora’s star and judas unchained, but these are X-rated. Trust me, wait till you are older!)

Hell, i don’t know. read animorphs!

THe point is, read what interests you. That (and maturation) i’m sure will improve your score (not 800, because that is just luck, but 750+)

Haha thanks for all the help guys! I just love reading in general and was thrilled when our English teacher told us we would be reading The Hobbit as our next assignment.

P.S. I <3 Animorphs

Don’t forget to read non-fiction books and publications too. A lot of the Critical Reading passages come from non-fiction pieces. I personally recommend books like Malcolm Gladwell’s Tipping Point and Blink. You could also gain a lot from reading articles in a publications like the New Yorker. But as packer22 already mentioned, you should read things that you enjoy!

Read something that interests you, but try to stick to things that use the English language properly. Sometimes text messages could be an interesting way to convey a novel, but reading text talk will not help you on the SAT.

Occasionally read something that is bit more challenging for you. A book with a slightly higher vocab level or one written before the 19th century generally provides a bit more of a challenge, so it would good to sprinkle those types of books into your reading.

It comes naturally, think of that song “naturally” lmao.

I was doing terrible in Reading, but after consistent practice, my scores have now been ranging from 700-760 on the section. Lets hope it stays that way, and I can get that score on the June SAT test lol.

Also, you should go and buy direct hits, both core and hard.

GL , just keep practicing

Wow thanks for all the responses!!

@shaheiruddin: That’s great!! I took a BB test and I got a 2050 (730M, 640W, 680CR)
I only missed about 1-2 sentence completions and a few in CR passage reading. Direct Hits is amazing! It brought my score up quite a bit in only a month’s time! Good Luck on your SATs!

What is the noitaraperp’s method???

I got a 680 in January, 670 in March, then my golden 720 (lol yes) in May. What I did was Direct Hits it up. It actually worked a little. And STAY FOCUSED. check your work over. I caught about 4 mistakes on my CR so give yourself some time to look back.

I hate CR. My Cr score was 120 points lower than my math and 160 lower than my writing. F you CR! haha. I might just take the whole thing again to raise it, but that would mean taking it in October… and I don’t feel like studying over the summer.
