Heading down to annapolis this weekend....found a list of resturants (like wallpaper, just too many to choose from!) any advice where to get the best crabs....waterside....aound annapolis? those of you that have been there, any recomentdations? (casual / not too fancy / just great food/atmosphere...will bring the company!!)-thanks!

if you haven't found out already, cutler's is the best local spot.

tried to find Cutlers on the annapolis website....was not able to find a resturant by that name, although they did list "Cantlers Riverside Inn" (crab house on mill creek)....is that it?

yes, thats it

heading off first thing in the morning- will definately try cantlers! thanks!

just got back from our visit....for those parents with plebes there now, we got to see many of them marching...despite the very hot (and humid) weather this weekend they all looked good and we saw lots of smiles....not too many stressed faces....saw some learning to wrestle....and a few learning to climb the rock wall in Hadsley....did see a few plebes in each platoon taking up the rear on crutches...but keeping pace nevertheless (I think it was a platoon....about 35 mids with 2-3 uppperclass???)....my heart went out to the guys and gals on crutches, but they were sure gutsy and impressive in their effort to keep pace with the rest....not to worry any parents out there, but even the ones on crutches looked "ok" ....meaning no obvious frowns or forrows from what I could see....my deepest respect for those mids enduring this heat-there was an audible sigh of relief when it started to pour....as if the heavens were taking pity and cooling everyone off in the process!!!

as for crabs, found Marty's on the South River...what a fun experience!

Thanks, Navy2010: Since my mid hasn't seemed to write in a week, it is good to know that all look good. She said in her call that she was sorry but just didn't seem to find the time to write. I actually felt good about that since if she was really homesick, she would find the time; knowing her. So, in her case, busy is good. :) We went to a good Irish place (I know, what an ironic statement) in downtown annapolis that was called something with a D (Donlans maybe?). It had some of the best crab cakes we ever had, believe it or not and is right downtown.

The Irish place, we saw it when up there; it was good?

Where is Marty's; it was also good re: pricing and taste? More or less directions?

The other place downtown for crabs; right downtown, I thought it was overpriced. [If I need to, I will get the name.]

bill0510: I think I goofed on the name...the resturant was "MIKEYS" and it was right on the south side of the south river....take west road to riva road and head south on riva road....cross the bridge over the south river and mikey's is on your left at the base of the bridge....great resturant....lots of fun....huge deck with tons of tables that extend over the river (docking space adjacent)... lots of waterside tables under umbrellas and others under the protection of an overhead roof (for those needing more shelter from the sun...and dare i say rain???)...lots more tables inside for those who need their A/C.....it was our first experience with crabs.....first they lined the tables with brown paper, then arm you with mallots and a pitcher of the local beer....by the time the crabs come (hot and heaped high on the platter) we counted ourselves lucky that we could hit them at all! Our waiter was great and EXTREMELY patient with us "novices" and taught us how to "open" the crab and dissamble/clean them for eating.....by the end of the night we had more than our fill and crab pilled everywhere....the table was a MESS!!!....and we were picking shells out of our hair....a great night with lots of laughs.....don't have any basis for comparing prices, just to say that it was $39/doz for medium, $49 for large, and $100/doz for jumbos....our waiter recommended the medium as they were "running fat"....it was more than enough for the 2 of us.....our soon-to-be-mid stuck to the ribs (they got his nod of approval and the kid knows his ribs!)....he has not developed the palete for the finer things in life yet but we remain hopeful.....

OOOhhhhhhh the descriptions of Maryland Blue Crab......Buddy's in Annapolis is a place I have gone to. Just your detailed descriptions are making my mouth water.....really sounds yummy.

Naps05Mom....while we did not observe everything the plebes were doing, it was obvious they were going from one adventure to the next....we saw, in the brief course of 2+ hours, marching, wrestling, rock climbing, sailing, running, and just as we left, lots of them running with towels to the pool.....the initial ones were walking in groups of 2-3, the later ones looked like they were behind and were hoofing it at a full jog to get to the pool.....
it was surprising to see so many females in each platoon....the guys almost looked outnumbered (although i know it is the other way around)...but they all looked really "good" ....nice haircuts and some well sun-kissed.....overall very healthy.....there was one girl on crutches that caught my eye who was rather short (my son would say vertically challenged)...stood maybe 5'2"....bringing up the rear but keeping pace (thanks to an ingenious ability to really swing herself forward with each crutch advancement)....she acutally looked like she was having fun and even made the turn perfectly in line! just amazing! I did see one mid "fall out" of line and go to the back of the platoon during marching...he looked quite flushed and looked to be really feeling the heat....but I must say one of the upperclassmen immediately fell to the back with him and stayed right along side him until they were back up in Bancroft....which welcomed all with a burst of cool air and relief from all the humidity.....the rain was a welcomed relief...came out of nowhere and really poured (they say to be sure to bring an umbrella during the summer and I can see why)....had hoped the rain would cool things down but in actuality it only made the air that much thicker....steam bath comes to mind....so it was good to see everyone headed indoors and on to another activity....
hope you hear from your daughter soon....can understand how they just want to hit their racks and collapse....I did and I was only there for 3 hours or so! I have decided I better start my training regimen if I am ever to make it through I day...physically that is.....there is no hope emotionally!!!!
best of luck to all!

haxmat: did i mention all the bay seasoning that waifed up from those steaming crabs and the sweeter-than-sugar corn on the cob washed down with that sweaty, ice-cold beer????
sweet dreams!
