Is Craiglist a legitimate source for trying to find an internship with an investment bank? A quick internship search for NYC returned dozens of paid and unpaid positions with middle market and boutique firms.

I would say that it absolutely is - but you need to be able to distinguish between the garbage and the quality opportunities. Many headhunters will post on Craigslist and then have little to nothing to offer you when you send in the paperwork and often blame you (which although is harmless, can be discouraging for applicants in this kind of a market). Other posts are going to be on the scam side.

Once you get through the garbage, however, you will find some quality opportunities - both paid and unpaid. I always recommend checking out efinancialcareers, Craigslist, your school’s career site and so forth. I actually found my first banking internship (which was paid and provided me with an incredible amount of experience - including strong live deal experience) on Craigslist several years ago. I also know of a handful of others who have found opportunities through the site. As with everything, there will be a lot of competition for just a few quality positions, but I would still add it to the list of sources to check - it doesn’t take much time, so why not do it. Good luck.
