Crap got my first D

In a major course...mehcanics of materials. The final is what killed me as I had a B going into it.

My overall GPA is still above a 3.2 (barely) but my term total is a 2.7. I was enrolled in 20 units and got a C+ in Dyanmics and a D in Mechanics of Materials. I'm happy I passed, it was the roughest of all my college quarters but, errr, in terms of graduate school and so on, how much do you think this sets me back?

I mean I obviously have to kick ass in the remainder of my classes, but does anyone know the magnitude a couple of bad grades will have on my chances for graduate school..or even just getting a job?

Sounds like you’re a sophomore, right? Just pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get it together next semester… Target is above a 3.5. Shoot for a 3.6 or a 3.7, if you can, and if you land a 3.5 minimum, get great recs and good GRE scores and work hard on your apps, you’ll be okay. Jobs are hard to get right now either way, but it’s not like a bad semester makes you completely unemployable. Get back on track and kick ass in the rest of your classes.

That was a tough load of classes. You didn’t do great, but you didn’t bomb out completely, and you at least struggled on the courses that are notoriously difficult. A “D” will probably make people go “Hmm…” but if you come back strong in the rest of your mechanics classes, you should be able to recover pretty well.

Right now I wouldn’t worry about graduate school…I’d focus on getting through your undergraduate.

You may have to retake Mechanics of Materials depending on your college.

this is a thread i started thinking that i may have failed linear algebra
hope it helps

Even if you don’t have to, retaking both classes would be a good idea. The second time through doesn’t just raise your GPA, it solidifies the course content in your head.

In any case, you can’t undo what’s already done, so stop worrying and move on.
