I was trying to transfer to Cornell for the Spring, and I just nearly sent in my common app online, but suddenly had a second thought.
I was going to apply to Human Ecology, as a human development major, however, I've suddenly considering ILR

I want to eventually go into law and policy. However, I just have this overwhelming curiosity for psychology and the human species.

(side note) I have all the pre reqs basically for the Human Development major, and for ILR I haven't taken economics yet.

Any suggestions? Comparisons between the colleges? Is one typically hard to get accepted than the other?

Also, I’m from California, and I know Humec is a contract college and takes a majority of students from NY, not sure if ILR is like this as well…

What year will you be? You’re a sophomore right? If so I think you can still transfer. You might be there an extra year, idk, but I’d be willing to bet if you did some summer and were really picky with your classes you could still get it done.

But I’ll let an ILRie be the authority, because I could be wrong.

But there are internal transfers. You could also see about changing your application, which is probably your best bet.

I just feel like, in my personal statement I state how I want to go into law school and into politics and policy, but then I apply for a Human Development major? They might think I’m like searching for a back door entrance into Cornell.

I think majoring in human development will help you learn more about human motivation–which clearly plays a significant role in law/politics. Anyway, good luck making your decision! :)

For what it’s worth, I’m a potential psych major/information science minor in A&S, with an interest in going into business. I may take some classes in ILR and AEM, but I have no desire to transfer.

There’s no one right path to any career…human behavior/development can be applied to many fields, including law. Cornell recognizes this, and if you emphasize that link in your application, I think you’ll be just fine.

you dont need to have a law/policy major to get into law school. you can major in plant pathology and decide to do law. go with your gut instinct, and if you are truly interested in psych/HD then go for it!! good luck!

Don’t sweat it dude, I’m a Communications major looking to do eventual work in Genetics and research medicine. Cornell is great because you can study a wide variety of things that doesn’t just include your major. Showing interest in other areas in your essay will probably help your application. Unless you blatantly say ‘I really wanna be in ILR, but I’m settling for HumEc’ or something stupid But no one serious about Cornell does that.

but, let me just say, as an ILR fall deferred applicant, not having any ILR prereqs might work against you…i feel like they really try to accept kids into ILR who have shown 100% dedication to it. I was only like 75% dedicated to it (didnt know if i wanted to be a history major or not) so i never took Macro, Micro, or Stats, and i KNOW that not taking those prereqs is probably a big part of the reason i was deferred. i mean, why give me a room in the fall and turn down another kid when that kid might have alllll of his prereqs taken care of? instead, i got deferred,im taking those three classes now at my cc, and i’ll be there in the spring…

i say stick to HumEc because to switch this late in the game would… i dunno… scare them? it would just be shaky…

Hi everyone! I’m a GT-Humec/ Policy Analysis & Management, for Spring 10. I was a poli sci major and was offered a GT option because I didn’t have bio 1&2, calc, & stats. I took 3 in summer & 1 now and will be going to CU in JAnuary, '10 as a 2nd semester sophomore.
Do whatever you feel is best for you, but I think that you might have a better chance of acceptance if you go Humec. I don’t think your essay will reflect negatively. Many medical profs have law degrees.
Good Luck…let me know what happens! :)
