Creating a possible schedule for Fall....the new undergrad catalog 2010-12

Not getting into too much detail, but this is one scenario based on DSs discussion with Prof. Cordes.

Second Sem. Freshman Year
As is shows 14 hours, but if you look closely and choose the ART 131 option (over ENGR 151) it totals 16 hours.
Awesome.
But AP Comp. Sci. places you out of CS250. (2 credits)
The next course in sequence Prof. Cordes wants DS to take is CS315. (3 credits)
which puts you at 17 credits.

Sure, you can drop EN102 with AP credits, but sure seems like a waste of those AP credits just to fit in that one extra credit hour.

Unless you can point me to a whole slew of 1 and 2 credit courses somewhere :)

I know we’ll work it out - no worries - but a lot more complex esp. when trying to fit in a double major.

Sure, you can drop EN102 with AP credits, but sure seems like a waste of those AP credits just to fit in that one extra credit hour.

What do you mean it’s a “waste” of AP credits? How would be a waste to let your AP English credit substitute for EN102 so that you can take something else in that place?

I don’t think I understand. Why can’t you put in other classes for the classes that are being skipped with AP classes?

I know we’ll work it out - no worries - but a lot more complex esp. when trying to fit in a double major.

It can be very hard to fit in a double major if the two majors are in two different colleges and require different Core - but if you have a lot of AP credits, it’s probably easier.

For EN 102, one might as well use the AP credits, IMHO. I’d rather have a lighter schedule than basically retake a class I already got credit for. Honors should have some 1-credit Common Book Experience courses listed soon and PE classes could be an option. Just because CS 315 is the next course in the sequence does not mean that he has to take it the 2nd semester instead of 1st semester sophomore year, although it may not be the best idea. If your son decides to take EN 102, the AP credits for that class won’t go anywhere else, they’ll just be replaced by those he earns by taking the class.

*
Unless you can point me to a whole slew of 1 and 2 credit courses somewhere*

There are some 1 & 2 credit courses in the Honors College.

Mike: when you go to Degreeworks, do they already have your AP credits shown or do you plug them in yourself? I don’t think D ever officially sent any AP scores, but of course, she’s set that up for the upcoming exams.

no worries - he is using his AP credits for all but Calc. Guess I’m not making myself clear but again, it will all work out. Will have to look at the Honors College for some fill-in courses.

^^^

If he’s strong in Calculus, then he really should move on to Cal II. Neither of my boys had any trouble going right into Cal II, and that frees up the space of 4 credits in the sequence.

Have been told by more than one prof. in Comp. Sci. that they like the idea of him taking Honors Calc I to make sure the foundation is strong. Don’t now if this is Comp Sci. specific, but we’re going with the recommendation. Can’t hurt.

^^^

True, it can’t hurt. I was just thinking in terms of trying to fit in a second major - that’s 4 credits that can be used for that.

Yes, I know that some profs recommend retaking Cal I, but I think that’s more of a response to having had some kids come thru with weak high school instruction. If your child has a strong AP Cal teacher and the student got a 5 on the AP exam, there really is no need to retake Cal I.

However, if Dr. Gleason is teaching it, I might consider recommending it. He teaches the “why”, not just the “how.” Kids who take him for math say that they learn more in his class than any class.

You also could audit Honors Calculus. My son did this, because he had not taken AP BC Calculus since his sophomore year of high school. He enjoyed his class with Dr. Allen.

^^^

But would that “free up” the 4 credits for another class? Wouldn’t you still get charged for those 4 credits against the 16 credit limit?

mine is planning to go ahead and take CALC I even though she should come in with the credit.

maybe she should decide for sure when she gets her AP test grade back.

^^^^

When she goes to Bama Bound, she can sign up for Cal II, and then after she gets her AP score, she can decide whether to drop down.

BTW…every student I’ve talked to says that Cal II is different than Cal I. Cal II doesn’t “build on” Cal I.

hmm … interesting.

i would have thought that it did build on calc I.

^ same here -
that may make a difference, though still not counting on DS to get a 5 in that class.

they only need a 3 on the AP for the credit

CALC A/B - CALC I
CLC B/C - CALC I and CALC II

^^^

True, but some might think that getting a 5 (or 4) is a stronger indication that the student learned the material.

true dat!!!(is that 10?) ha!

???

hahahahahahahahaha!
