Anybody auditioning? Did anybody get their assigned time yet?

lkf725 - What are you going to be auditioning for (drama, music, etc.)?

My son is auditioning for music...any yours?

Here's some info on it:

Looks like the deadline for applying has passed:

lkf725 - my son sent in an art portfolio, but since he got a merit scholarship we weren't sure that they would have him come down and do a presentation because we are thinking that if he got a creative achievement award both awards would exceed tuition. I think that you can only get scholarships to cover the tuition not room & board (except of course for the full tuition/room & board specific awards)? They did send us an OLAP application which was due today (I think). That scholarship is from $1,000 - $4,000 which wouldn't exceed tuition. Is your son going to Case for sure?
T990 - Yes, you are right. The deadline for applying for these scholarships was 1/15. However the OLAP application was sent to us. We did not apply for it.

Mominsearch, what is OLAP? My son did send the CA form in by the deadline, and of course he has to go personally to audition (no CDs accepted!). We got an academic merit scholarship, too, but it was not full ride (19,400), so I think we still qualify to do this. In the case of music, I understand that the audition is necessary for music study and for cross registration at CIM (although I certainly could be wrong...that seems to happen alot lately!) He has not decided on Case for sure, although it is probably in the top three choices. The money is surely attractive, and the cultural area around Case is great. Is Case your son's top pick, or are you also waiting for other responses? (I sure wish I know somebody who went there recently!)

Oh, mominsearch...if you click on the link above supplied by T990, art students are to come in April for a portfolio review. I guess they will assign a time for review or audition????

lkf725 - Thanks for the info. Yes, Case is my son's top pick. We love the cultural area around the campus too. It is exceptional. People have to remember when figuring out the costs of things that when attending Case you have free transportation (no car needed), access to museums, parks, restaurants, plays, etc. that you just can't beat it. Plus many of the museums are free, and I noticed on the website that there is a play coming up in the next couple of weeks @ Playhouse Sq. that the kids can attend for $10 (most seats are on average at least $30-$50)! We live outside of Cleveland, and we know quite a few kids that attend Case. They absolutely love it! Don't believe all the stuff about kids studying 20 hours a day (yes, they do study tho), have nothing to do, etc. If you can't find anything to do at this college (in or around) then it is your problem. They also got another food vendor this past year and I know that all the kids are very pleased with them. If your son loves culture, and not spending a lot of money to get it, wants a great education then I recommend this college highly.

lkf725 - Oops - the OLAP is an Ohio Leadership (something) scholarship. You have to live in Ohio to be eligible for this & have leadership positions & skills.

mominsearch,
What other institutions has your son applied to? My son is intersted in multiple areas of study, and Case's "one door" policy was attractive. He is interested in engineering, physics, math, music performance, foreign language, and maybe law or business for grad school (how's that for a wide variety??!! At least the eng/phys/math sort of go together!). I wonder if it is really possible to maintain multiple areas of study...do any of the students you know at Case do this?

What is this "little italy" I hear about?

lkf725 - Wow your son picked a great college for what he may want to pursue. Obviously you did your homework. Case is wonderful in all those areas, and you are right the "one door" admission policy is certainly a good selling point. We live in Ohio and basically just looked at colleges in our home state. Logistically, financially, etc. it just seemed to be the best choice. We have so many excellent colleges in this state we really felt that we should support them. I can't say that there is not one in Ohio we didn't check out thoroughly, but we came to the conclusion that my son wanted to sample a lot of different things that the LAC's just weren't going to work for him. Since he loves University Circle and decided he wanted to major in French & Art History with a minor in studio art that Case would be a perfect fit. Thank God he got in because he changed his mind about his major in Dec. Our only backup at this point was Bowling Green State University that offered him full tuition & fees which is quite nice (even tho he got admitted to other LAC's we knew by this point that none of them could help him). Not worring about how much the tuition is going to go up every year would have been a great thing. Plus, they have a great art & honor's program. So are we thankful that he got in & got a good scholarship - you betcha. I was really getting worried until we received his acceptance.

"Little Italy" - It is a great little area with all kinds of Italian restaraunts, bakeries, art galleries, etc. Just a charming little area to spend an afternoon.

lkf725 - I think I need to make one clarification. When I said that "Not worrying about how much the tuition is going to go up every year..." I meant at BGSU not Case. Also as to your other question about knowing other people who do areas of multiple study. Yes, a lot of people do that. I hope you guys are thinking about coming to an Experience Case Day because we have found these events (at other colleges) very helpful. Plus they give out tons of information that is not on their website, and you have an opportunity to ask questions.

mominsearch,
It seems that we have this threat to ourselves! We went to one open house day over the summer, and plan to come to at least once more event for admitted seniors and the and creative achievement award auditions (happily both on the same weekend!) In addition to the great cultural area, I really like that Case seems to encourage students to pursue different intersts. My son also applied to CMU because of its awesome departments in his areas of interest and their frequent crossover between disciplines, and was accepted into the honors program at our state u (great value and well liked program). I'm not sure what he'll decide, though. I do know that I will really need a vacation when this is all over! (oops! maybe I shoud save that money!)

lkf725 - OMG I totally agree, a vacation sounds great. I never knew that the college search/admission could be so stressful. It is so tiring to do the pre-admission visitation days, the art portfolio reviews (imagine doing "special" art work for each school plus your AP art course which needs at least 24 pieces, AP classes, essays & more essays etc. etc. etc.). Not to mention hearing about how the financial aid works or the tours! I did a couple tours and decided that my son was going to go to the college not me & he could do them on his own. To tell you the truth if I was my son I probably would have killed myself by now. I think senioritis is starting to set in & honest to God I can't blame him. If he gets A-'s so be it!

By the way CMU is also a great school & I got a chance to visit there this past summer. I was very surprised to find that Pittsburgh was actually a great little town (of course, after all the crap I hear about Cleveland, I don't know why I would be surprised). If you go to the Pittsburgh visitor's information website there is tons of stuff to do. I think it is very similar to Cleveland except for the traffic. I told my husband that when we go back we are not going over the bridge heading towards the airport! We weren't even there on a busy day and it was pretty stressful in the driving department. If you go back the art museum is very nice and they have a lovely garden/greenhouse near the art museum (can't think of the name of it, but it is on the website) which is just fabulous. There is also a "Little Italy" area there as well. Anyways, good luck. If you have anything else you want to ask me feel free...

lkf725 - One other thing I was thinking about. At Case you can have your Masters degree in 5 years (there is an IGS (name ?) that lets you start working on your masters in your senior year). Make sure you check this out at CMU although I would be suprised if they too did not offer the same thing. Even though the state school or even a private LAC offers free tuition, etc. if your son wants to go to grad school this is a huge consideration. Not only financially but time wise.

Thanks for the 5 year masters degree info... I will definitely look into it and make sure that my son is aware of these programs. Wonderful opportunity!
