Hi,

I attend a private lac on east coast. I am planning to apply to columbia, nyu, upenn, cmu, bu and uchicago (probably) as a transfer. I am a freshmen. My college has this option that I could declare a course as no credit so that it WON'T count in my gpa but it WILL count for my graduation requirement (i.e. completion of 32 credits). I want to know how this would affect my transfer reqs because some of the colleges on my list require me to complete 30-32 credit hours prior to transferring. I have 15 credit hrs for this semester including the course that i want to declare as no-credit.

Please reply soon.

The difference it will make is that the transfer school will view a pass in a C/noC class as a C grade, because that is the minimum grade to pass the class. So, if you could earn an A or B in the class, you are being downgraded, if you only think you can make a C, then it’s a wash.

Unless you really don’t think you can do well in the class, I wouldn’t recommend taking a C/noC as 15 units is a normal load and you are applying to some very selective schools (Col, Penn, UChicago). If you were taking 18 units with one being C/noC, that would be different since the the C/noC class would be beyond a normal load.

That makes sense.

Thanks for your reply :)
