I was just accepted to transfer into Smith, and unfortunately, I have a credit shortage since I currently attend a school on the quarter system. I’m around 5.33 credits short, which isn’t too bad. Is there any advice on how to make this up? I’m considering taking 5 classes for one or two quarters, but I’ll be working and competing for XC and Track+ I want to go to law shool so I don’t want my GPA to significantly drop.
The most annoying part is that I only get 2.67 credits each towards three classes that count towards my Latin Distributions (math, arts, and science). Are there any two credit courses I can take to complete these distributions? I’d rather not take three extra 4 credit classes, since that may put me behind.
Any advice?
If you don’t want to overload, you could consider taking a few j-term classes for credit or perhaps some 1-credit Exercise and Sports Studies (ESS) classes. Most don’t count towards your Latin honors distribution though.
Re: Latin honors distribution, you have a few options without taking a full 4-credit class. You can take a half-semester 2-credit intro computer science class (CSC102 or CSC103) for the math distribution, 2 1-credit dance/music classes or a 2-credit dance or landscape studies class for the arts, and GEO102 (Exploring the Local Geologic Landscape) for the sciences class.
To be honest though, if you want a little more variety, it shouldn’t be too bad to take an easy four-credit class. For math I’d recommend SDS136 (Communicating with Data). For an easy sciences class, PSY100 (Intro to Psychology) is a good option, since psychology is considered a natural science here. As for the arts class, it would probably depend on your interests!
No problem! I’m not completely sure if transfers are allowed to take FYS for the WI requirement. I’d guess yes because other non-first-year students are allowed to take some FYS (as regular classes).
I second SDS136 if you want an easy math class or if you just want the 4 credits. The class is super easy and aside from lectures I think putting in about 1-3 hours a week is fine for it. at the end of the course if you’re like me you’ll put in 15ish hours for the final project and thats about it.
there are also performance/exercise classes you can take that give you 1-2 credits per semester.
j-term classes too
