Help this newbie out.

Hello! Okay, so this is my situation. I will be a freshman in college come this September. Between merit and financial aid, it’s a full ride. However, I am not 100% happy about the school, and I am already set on transferring. I am not going to make this thought of transferring stop me from getting involved though. I am going to make the best of it no matter what.

I am taking 16 credits at this school, and there’s a possibility I may be in the honors program. Additionally, I plan on taking 1-2 ONLINE courses at a community college in my area. I think I will get merit aid and these courses will be covered as well.

My goal from the start was to attend the University of Miami, and although I was accepted, I just could not afford the school. I did get a decent FA package, but again, it would not cut it for my needs. I am thinking of retaking the ACT this winter. I submitted a 29 composite to my schools, and I honestly think I could have done better.

Can someone please tell me if I am on the right course for transferring? When I apply as a transfer, do they look at college course load? For example, does it matter to them if I took Math with Application instead of Calculus? I never took AP Calc, but I took regular Calc senior year…

Thanks so much!

Can you afford to transfer? Talk the money issue over with your family. Transfers usually do not get as generous an aid package as freshmen applicants. If you really dislike your current option, then you may be best off to take a gap year, raise your ACT score, and apply to a new list for fall 2017.

You can only be enrolled as a degree candidate at one college or university at a time. You are not likely to be eligible for aid for the classes you might take at the CC.

Unless the courses at the CC are necessary for the degree program at the college/university you are currently enrolled in, don’t waste your time and money on those classes. You want to focus on getting the best grades possible where you are so that you can transfer successfully. A bad grade from the CC classes or a drop in your other grades because of the time spent on those classes could wreck your plans. Also, you will forever have to be ordering up copies of that transcript - that alone is enough reason to not take an extra class there!

Many places will not accept an ACT or SAT score taken after you have started college. Before you spend your time and money on retaking the ACT, verify that the places on your list will accept that new score.
