Credits

Hi all, I’m starting college for the first time next month as a bio major hoping to go to medical school. My schedule for first semester right now is 15 credits with chem w/ lab, psychology, pre-calc, and intro to university life. My advisor told me I should take on one more class to have 18 credits. My AP credits exempted me from English and bio 1 and 2. I was thinking about maybe taking genetics or cell biology to get the full 18 credits but I don’t know if it’s a good idea please help!!!

If you already have a full courseload with 15 credits, then I definitely wouldn’t recommend adding on another unless your requirements are really strict (for example, pre-med students at my school are allowed very little flexibility with course selection; they have to take as many classes as soon as possible). What exactly is your advisor’s rationale?

Unless you need a ridiculous amount of credits to graduate, like 140+, and you’re trying to do it in 4 years, just keep it to 15 for this semester. 18 hours is hectic, and I wouldn’t try it if it’s your first semester.

Like everyone else has said, there’s no real need for you to add another class unless you’re looking to double major or graduate early. That being said if you do want to add another class, I would go with genetics or an elective/GE requirement.
