Creswell v. Myers

I was accepted into the Honors program and everyone is pushing me toward staying in Myers. I realize Creswell is not nearly as nice as Myers, but I think it would be much more social. I’m not into wild partying, but I like the idea of people keeping their doors open in the evening to socialize, rather than most of them sitting behind closed doors studying. I intend to do my studying in the library and view the dorm more as place to hang out with friends.

Any thoughts on these two dorms?

Have you talked to anyone that is in the honors program about your options? Both my girls found Myers to be social and found great friend groups.

My son was an honor student in Creswell, and he still feels that it is a better choice for meeting friends. He graduated last May, and has stayed in touch with some of the friends that he met on his freshman Hall. He did slightly steer his sister towards Myers, because someone told us that if you aren’t in a sorority, some girls feel left out socially in Creswell.

Would boys feel left out in Creswell if they are not in a fraternity?

He thinks no.

This is a repost from a few months back when someone else asked me about the housing situation at UGA. I hope you find this useful:

First of all, congrats! Welcome to UGA. You’ll have a blast these next four (or however many) years.

Not interested in parties? Then avoid the highrises (i.e. Russell, Creswell, Brumby). They’re relatively social, and have a concentration of students in fraternities/sororities. However, they are exclusive to freshmen (excluding the RAs, who aren’t freshmen), which may be a preference to some.

If you just want a smaller, quieter dorm, any of the other alternatives will do. Hill, Myers, and Reed community aren’t as social. Hill is reserved for freshmen as well, I believe. They also have in-room sinks, with a mirror. A mini bathroom, if you will.

Myers community is akin to Hill, just a bit more “special” in the sense that each of the dorms there house kids from special programs, like the Honors Program. Of course, not all Honors students choose to dorm in Myers. Plenty dorm elsewhere, be it in Boggs, Building 1516, and so forth.

Do note that Myers is known to be less “social” since it’s the Honors dorm. Not a knock on them in any way, but they genuinely do spend more time studying. Which may be what you’re looking for.

I can’t say much about Reed. Dunno much about it. I do know it’s one of the nicer dorms.

Other things to note:
Not all dorms are alike in pricing. If the dorm looks nicer and/or has more amenities, chances are it’ll cost more per semester. Hill Community dorms are, for example, cheaper than Myers Community or Reed Community dorms. You get what you pay for.

Rutherford shouldn’t too far away from your classes. Your own experiences will vary, depending on where you actual classes are located come fall. But you do have a bus stop right next to Rutherford. You also have the Snelling Dining Commons next to you there (the 24/7 dining hall at UGA).

Learn to use the buses via the UGA app; bus stops and departure times are shown there, as well as live tracking of the buses (as well as on transit.uga.edu).

If you want Myers or Rutherford, apply as early as possible. Those dorms are prioritized for the Honors students (and Rutherford for something else: can’t remember), so it’s much harder to get in if you don’t fall under those categories.

Don’t worry too much about distance, unless you’re staying in Building 1516. The buses are plentiful and convenient, and you’ll learn to ride them to your classes.

I recommend Hill community (Hill, Boggs, Church, Lipscomb, Mell) as a good middle ground! It’s more social than Myers and nicer than the high rises. It has a good location too, between two dining halls. You get a larger room, more storage space, a sink in the room, and control over the room temperature. I personally couldn’t deal with the super loud party scene of the high rises where I live, so I lived at Myers and decided I’d go out for that, but I think for most people, Hill community would be perfect!

Hey Hulahoop

I stayed in Myers my freshmen year, and I think the social experience is what you make out of it. Some corners of myers are more social than others, and some are more quiet. Some class years in myers are more social/quiet than others. For the most part, I would say Myers is pretty social for my year, at least in my hall. You just have to find your own niche and your group of folks you are going to hang out with.

There are quite a lot of activities organized by the housing folks on the quad. Tailgating hotspot is in myers too.
