I just got admitted EA for UGA, so GOOOO DAWGS! But I’m currently trying to decide on which dorms to choose as my top three dorms! I’m not quite sure which one would be the best for me! Overall, I’m not very interested in parties, and I think I would like a more quiet dorm with friendly people. I really like Rutherford, but I’m not sure how far away it will be from my classes. Also, I’m not sure how hard that one is to get into and how far away it is from the dining halls. I really would prefer dorms that don’t have a community bathroom or are incredibly small haha! What are some of the best dorms to stay in? I’m assuming that I won’t get into the honors college right off of the bat, but is it worth it to even put Myers as one of my choices? I’m open to all suggestions! Thanks in advance!
First of all, congrats! Welcome to UGA. You’ll have a blast these next four (or however many) years.
Not interested in parties? Then avoid the highrises (i.e. Russell, Creswell, Brumby). They’re relatively social, and have a concentration of students in fraternities/sororities. However, they are exclusive to freshmen (excluding the RAs, who aren’t freshmen), which may be a preference to some.
If you just want a smaller, quieter dorm, any of the other alternatives will do. Hill, Myers, and Reed community aren’t as social. Hill is reserved for freshmen as well, I believe. They also have in-room sinks, with a mirror. A mini bathroom, if you will.
Myers community is akin to Hill, just a bit more “special” in the sense that each of the dorms there house kids from special programs, like the Honors Program. Of course, not all Honors students choose to dorm in Myers. Plenty dorm elsewhere, be it in Boggs, Building 1516, and so forth.
Do note that Myers is known to be less “social” since it’s the Honors dorm. Not a knock on them in any way, but they genuinely do spend more time studying. Which may be what you’re looking for.
I can’t say much about Reed. Dunno much about it. I do know it’s one of the nicer dorms.
Other things to note:
Not all dorms are alike in pricing. If the dorm looks nicer and/or has more amenities, chances are it’ll cost more per semester. Hill Community dorms are, for example, cheaper than Myers Community or Reed Community dorms. You get what you pay for.
Rutherford shouldn’t too far away from your classes. Your own experiences will vary, depending on where you actual classes are located come fall. But you do have a bus stop right next to Rutherford. You also have the Snelling Dining Commons next to you there (the 24/7 dining hall at UGA).
Learn to use the buses via the UGA app; bus stops and departure times are shown there, as well as live tracking of the buses (as well as on transit.uga.edu).
If you want Myers or Rutherford, apply as early as possible. Those dorms are prioritized for the Honors students (and Rutherford for something else: can’t remember), so it’s much harder to get in if you don’t fall under those categories.
Don’t worry too much about distance, unless you’re staying in Building 1516. The buses are plentiful and convenient, and you’ll learn to ride them to your classes.
