I’ve heard alot of rumors about there being massive problems with crime at Florida State. Some of my friends are freshman and they said that it can be sketchy at times depending on where you are. I want to know HOW safe Tally is and the FSU campus itself is at night? Are you afraid to go to the library late at night? Is it unsafe to walk alone at night, even as a male? I really would just like to hear some honest opinions of the environment in regards to safety, I’ve heard that people from FAMU, TCC, and local tally degenerates are known to cause problems like car burglary, drug problems, muggings, etc.
Only reason I’m asking is because I’m probably going to get into UF and I know from experience that their campus is pretty safe. I’m a male but my twin sister is also deciding between UF/FSU and I want to know if you’d let your daughter/sister walk alone at night while at FSU? Its a big factor for us because she is pretty defenseless and doesn’t want to feel threatened while at school.
Massive? That’s an exaggeration. You can search for “high crime rate universities” and I don’t think you’ll see FSU on any of the lists. There is crime at FSU as there is every university. The larger the university is, the more crime there usually is.
If feeling safe and avoiding crime is a major concern of yours, you might want to consider attending a small university instead. The campuses are usually smaller and more controlled.
This is an important factor especially for OOS students. We are not familiar with the area and we don’t want to end up thinking that we are going to an idealic Florida college town and end up in the midst of a crime scene.
I hope someone can give specifics.
@NewYorker404 You can’t get any more specific than the crime reports I linked above. With not knowing exactly where a student is moving from, it’s hard to say. He/she may be coming from a safer or less safe town. The reports show that FSU appears to have a bit more crime reported in some areas. Like all campuses I wouldn’t advise walking around at night alone. FSU does have a bus station down the road with too many transients, but UF also has transients that roam around certain areas. However, if you tour both, you will be very happy with the lengths they go to make campus safe. It is a high priority, and many options are available to students to insure their safety.
Tallahassee has the same issues any metro area has. There’s worse neighborhoods and better neighborhoods.
I went to FSU for 6 years, both undergrad and grad, and never really felt unsafe on campus. The main thing you have to remember is to be smart when walking around, especially late at night.
I won’t lie and say that FSU doesn’t have any crime, because it does. Robberies on or right around campus are more common than you would like, though it definitely seems like that number dropped significantly the last couple years.
