How safe is living off campus

My D, an International student has been accepted at FSU. From what I hear on this board, on campus housing is in short supply and by the time the housing info comes via snail mail, I imagine there will be none left. If she doesn't drive, how easy/safe is it to live off campus?

First of all, it's VERY important to apply online here: http://www.housing.fsu.edu/

UF may still use snail-mail (it was when my daughter was accepted in 2004) but FSU is all on the web. Apply the very second she is accepted.

There are nearby off-campus commercial dorms and apartments. Lots of students live in them.

Safety - FSU has an excellent police department and they have the Blue-Light system on campus and many transportation alternatives for students, especially at night. Regardless, it still always pays for your student to have a personal cell phone and use common sense, especially late at night. With two daughters enrolled at FSU now I urge them to take no foolish chances even if the police are good at what they do. It always makes me worry when I get a call from them walking home late at night, but most times there are plenty of other students around.

Thank you so much for that link...I'm heading right over there!

Here's a link to the FSU Police Department: http://www.police.fsu.edu/

They have lots of information about living at FSU including how to prepare for hurricanes, the blue light trail and more.

There are TONS, I mean TONS, of student apartments that are either directly adjacent to the university or in the nearby area. Most of them are walking distance from campus and some , like Heritage Grove, have bus trails that go directly to it.
