I live 8 miles from UCF, and I can say that UCF is in a better part of the town. The high crime parts of Orlando are all West of I-4 and downtown. Generally speaking, anything East of downtown is nice, and anything west is where you want to stay away from.

My sister lives in Oveido, about 2 miles away. She could WALK there safely. Crime is crime, and it can happen anywhere. And there are always student ghetto apartment complexes near every university. But the general areas is not problematic. There are lots of housing subdivisions near the University, with nice homes. There are commercial areas as well. I grew up nearby. I am not aware that there are serious problems in the vicinity.

I wouldn’t consider Orlando to be “Disney Town…” Disney isn’t technically even located in Orlando and is about 30-45 minutes away from UCF. I don’t live in Orlando, but I’ve been told that it’s really downtown areas that are the worst. Areas that are very touristy like Orlando, Miami, NY etc always have the high crime rates. And as “sunnyflorida” mentioned, there is always that “bad area” or “suitcase city” near a university. I wouldn’t really worry about the UCF campus being worse than other major school campuses.

The area around the campus is very nice. Crime will definitely occur anywhere. Luckily, crime near the downtown area has drastically decreased within the past few years. There was a current ranking system that ranked one of Orlando’s neighborhoods (Paramore) as 22nd most dangerous neighborhood in the nation - BUT the result was USED with data from a few years back prior to any of the changes.

Could someone please post a list of apartment complexes near UCF that are “safer” to live in? My daughter wants to move off campus next year and I am very concerned for her safety. She has no clue about what is out there (having lived in a quiet suburb all her life). What have people heard about Northgate, Science Drive, The Edge, Tivoli, and The Lofts? These are all complexes that she thought she would look into. She is looking to move to a 4/4 with three friends. Any and all information would be appreciated please.
