University of Miami Safety

Hi, I'm from Allen, tx, which is a little town off of plano which has virtually no crime. i'm wondering about the dangerousness of miami...I heard that it has one of the most crime rates in the nation, but I am thinking of attending University of Miami there. Is it really that dangerous?

ill look for you when you come here ;)

oh boy..

but seriously, is the city like all drugs, gang violence and stuff?

Umiami is in a beautiful upscale suburb. We visited recently.

You're not in Miami, you're in Coral Gables which is a rich suburb that is very safe. I wouldn't be worried. It's when you go into the city where you have to be careful, they will go over that in orientation.

Except for live crocodiles on campus, that is all I would worry about.

gators not crocs

What's difference? Gators don't bite?

Regardless . . . U. Miami is no more in Miami than Boston College is in Boston. South Florida may be somewhat sketchy in generally, but that's not the case in Coral Gables.

Coral Gables is one of the wealthiest suburbs in America...Now if you drive up to one of the bad neighborhoods, you could be in trouble, but The Grove is mostly safe except around Halloween and South Beach is fine.

The college is very safe. My S goes there and never has been concerned about safety. As was said before, the surrounding area of Coral Gables is a well to do suburb. The only area that is run down is on the way to Coconut Grove and I can see that neighborhood changing. You should visit!
