Ok so basically I'm desperate for input on some of my art right now. I am applying to colleges right now, and I REALLY want to go to an art school so that I can jump straight into foundation studies my freshman year. I made a really last minute decision a few months ago that I wanted to study art, but I realized that I had really little finished pieces of work so the past few months have been devoted to churning out as many pieces as I could. However, I honestly don't know if all my work is even worth it right now, because I feel like my art is pretty boring. It's very fine-artsy, and some people have told me that I can be really good at fine arts but it wouldn't even matter for art schools if my work isn't "unique" enough. So I might try to spend more time developing more creative art in the remaining weeks I have left. I also have to work on the home tests for a lot of schools. Can someone critique whatever I have so far? I'd really appreciate it :)
I would love to get into any art school, and RISD would be my dream school, but I know its a huge reach. I would love to get into Parsons as well, but do they prefer more "designy" art portolios? I'm also interested in Pratt, MICA, and Massart. I just want to hear some opinions.

A lot of these are unfinished, I just stuck them in there so I could look at all of them in one place. Thanks!

I think your weakest art pieces is the two lamp drawings and the pot drawing.

The monochromatic oil painting of the lamp has a more interesting background with the cloth… however, the lamp itself isn’t drawn in perspective compare to the charcoal lamp drawing. Also, the oil painting is less visual appealing because the lamp is almost center… where as the charcoal lamp is more visual appealing because it is off-center.

The Charcoal lamp is drawn very well perspective wise, but the background doesn’t look right. (looks off.)

Since charcoal is easy to fix and add on… I would suggest more work done on the background.

The Pot is weak because its almost in the center, perspective is slightly off, (top and the spout) and is pretty plain.

Everything else I feel are pretty strong pieces. It is apparent you are a very talented artist. I can’t wait to see more of your work!

Hi,
I’m impressed! Your portraits are very strong and mature and the figure drawing is a plus in a portfolio (the female is a very strong drawing. The male looks a bit out of proportion in its height). I don’t agree with anyone who tells you that the art schools want more conceptual or abstract work but I could be wrong since it has been quite a while since i applied to art school. I believe that the schools want strong observational drawing and you have alot of that. Good job pulling it together so quickly. I will be surprised if you don’t get into some of your choices. Good luck!

It’s not about the quality of your art so much as it is the composition of your portfolio. Though it has continuity, it in and of itself is also monochromatic. You have talent, but you need to push your work.
