As a new transfer student I only plan on taking the minimum amount of units to sort of let myself get settled in. I will be taking the Human Biology route in case you're wondering.

A few questions:

I plan on minoring in philosophy, reason being is because I did all my GE's first at my CC and was stuck with all lower division science and math courses, which really sucked. Once I'm done taking the MMW classes for ERC I was going to start taking the philosophy courses to sort of fill up my schedule so I'm not stuck taking 4 upper division science courses every quarter; do you think this is a good idea?

How are the teachers I'm taking, as far as grading and passing back work.

Do I even need BILD 2? I sent a message through the newstudent site but haven't got back a response in over 3 days. I have all my lower division stuff done besides math 20C if that helps.

Would you change my schedule, if so why? Or is it fine as is. I'll have school T, W, and Th which is nice.

Feel free to critique and give me any pointers. Also, I want to give a BIG THANK YOU to $KingsElite$ for being so helpful and answering all my questions as best as he could, thanks a lot bro!

I find that taking upper div humanities classes to be sort of distracting. They tend to be writing and reading heavy so I feel like it takes away time from my science classes. I want to study for my major classes but then I’ll have this 10 page paper to write or a take home midterm to do. But this is just my opinion. If you really like philosophy you should definitely go for it.

Chang is pretty good. MMW is a low stress class anyway. Just go to lecture and do the monster study guide he puts up before midterms/finals and you should be fine. The grading depends on your TAs. They are the ones who grade the tests and research papers. I haven’t taken Ternansky for O-Chem but from friends’ experiences I can say that he is a good professor who can give you a solid foundation in O-Chem. His test averages are notoriously low but he has a great curve.

BILD 2 is not a requirement. I’m a biochemistry/cell bio major in the Bio department and I don’t need to take it either. You should look at the rest of the upper div requirements/electives for your major and see if they have BILD 2 as a prereq.
From this chart: [Prerequisite Information](http://biology.ucsd.edu/undergrad/prereq.html) you can see that most of the BIPN courses do require BILD 2.

Overall, I think this looks like a good plan. I would add MATH 20C, just because it is one of the easier courses in the 20 series. First quarter freshman year I only took 3 classes and was going out of my mind from boredom. All of my suitemates would be studying and I’d just be done. I’m someone who would rather be super busy than have loads of spare time so again, this really depends on your personal preference. Maybe, you could sign up for 4 classes and then drop one if you feel its too much?

wow, thanks for the thorough response. Turn our I don’t need BILD 2 so I ended up singing up for genetics. I’m confused as to what the difference is between A00, B00, and C00. I’m signed up for B00 with Laurie Smith.

Well, it says so right there in the class schedule:

I’m guessing the class is so large that one lecture will actually be in the same lecture hall with the professor while the other two lectures will be simultaneously streamed from two nearby lecture halls.

I’m actually going to disagree with operaticmimosa and say that I like the variety of classes in my schedule when possible. But yeah, it is just a personal preference thing so you can try it out and see if it works for you.

And for BICD 100, even though I’m not going to take that class this quarter I noticed the strange distance learning thing. I’ve never heard of anything like that before here so tell me how it goes.

And no problem at all for the help. I joined this website back in the day to get some pointers before I came to UCSD and then stuck around to help others so I could one day be like the great forefathers of this forum (astrina, Oyama, ucsandiego915, OoPurestOo, Arctic). If I didn’t love helping people I wouldn’t be here. :)

Thanks guys. Apparently (at least what I think) the BICD 100 B00 and C00 are going to be distant learning while A00 will be with the professor (I assume this because its the biggest class at 400 students). Hopefully all goes well though.

Here’s my first contribution to any of you who have yet to sign up, review your academic history on Tritonlink and make sure your classes are UCSD approximate! (this only applies to transfers) In regards to the human bio major I only need math 20C to complete my lower division coursework. Luckily before I signed up for classes I realized that I was not getting credit for any of my chemistry or biology courses (even though they’re equivalent on assist.org). So I had to call the biology and chemistry department (they were VERY helpful and understanding) and tell them to fix it. Had I not done this I wouldn’t be able to sign up for upper division courses because of pre-reqs…just a heads up to new transfer students. I would have hated to wait longer to register for classes considering how quick some classes fill up…
