So I've been told many times UCSD is has a good CS program and I really like UCSD for it's campus and extra-curriculars but I'm worried it won't match my study interests. I really really want to research video gaming and the prospects of virtual reality. Would a CS major in UCSD have courses for those interested in video game design or computer science in relation to the brain to enhance a 'virtual gaming reality'?

Yes, I know this is a bit odd, but any advice about this topic is helpful. :) If I could attend Triton Day myself, I would ask them in person but sadly, a continent, an ocean, and a lack of funds stop me from doing so. D:

I also got accepted into UCI, so I'm in the midst of deciding which could be better for me.

UCSD does has some upper division in these topics. I know there is a pretty difficult game making class, and I know first hand the Ubiquitous computing class deals with virtual reality. In the class, I programmed with a group on both the google glass and microsoft kinect. Seeing that the dev kit was just realesed for the oculus rift, there might be a class for that by the time you finish all your basic programming courses (~2 years). It can probably be incorporated as a separate project, (research Moxie lab and CSE 197). I’m also pretty UCSD’s CSE program is much more renowned than UCI’s.

Now your particular interest is something you probably will need to do on your own. Companies that hire to do specific things like that, usually don’t expect prior experience in such. However, you are MORE likely to get hired by said company if you go to a higher ranked school. Obviously it also depends on a million other factors.

Good luck choosing. Hope I was helpful.

UCI has Game Design major! if you’re into Game industry, I’d suggest going to UCI. It should be more focused in this field in UCI than in UCSD

^ I guess there is that . Sorry, as I mentioned, I don’t know much about UCI.
