Could someone explain what CSP is at Michigan? Who gets in? Why? Criteria? Some details about what it means?

I found this really helpful: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/1086043-university-michigan-summer-bridge-program.html

Hi,

I’m in CSP. I was also confused when I got the invitation last year. Basically what they will tell you at orientation is that you were chosen to be in it due to a variety of reasons. Some reasons may include that you’re from a very small school, are one of the few people from your school coming here, are from an underrepresented area, are a minority, or maybe even because your grades were not so hot in high school. They see you as needing extra advising and help with your career here to make you comfortable so you won’t end up leaving.
They told me I was in it because of my small school that I was in it.

The summer bridge I believe is for students who had trouble in high school with courses. You would take a few classes during the summer and they all count toward your transcript. Your completion of the courses will allow you to continue at U of M in the fall. Not everyone in CSP goes to the summer bridge. I didn’t qualify for it.

CSP has been useful to me in many ways. They offer tutors (for free! usually you’d pay like $30 an hour for a random person). They also have special CSP and discussion sections just for us. Many of the CSP lecturers are highly regarded and students really love them, according to rate my professors.

Basically, you can use CSP or not. You don’t have to use the tutors or the advisors or register for the CSP versions of the courses. It’s there if you need/want it.
