I'm applying to Dartmouth ED, and I found out about the profile literally last night. Is it possible to complete it before the deadline? If not, will I still be able to apply ED if I submit the CSS late? Also, the problem isn't filling out the Profile, it's getting all the tax forms from my parents which could take a while.

If you don’t meet Dartmouth’s priority deadline for the CSS Profile, they will NOT be able to prepare a financial aid package for you by the time your ED decision is given. How will you make a decision whether you can ACCEPT the ED offer of admission if you don’t get your financial aid award at the same time.

Get it done…explain to your parents how important this is.

Otherwise, apply RD.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Let’s assume I submit it, say, one or two days late. Would that be alright? I’ve read accounts of others saying that the admissions officers consider the application materials before they determine a possible financial aid package. I’ve read about ED applicants who have sent the CSS late, yet still received financial aid.

If you can get it done “1-2 days late”, you can get it done on time. If you play by the rules, chances of winning increase.

Yes, you have plenty of time to do it. Tell your parents to get used to providing the info as they’ll need to have it available every year you are in college/filling out financial aid forms.

Why would you take that chance? Get everything submitted before the deadline date…do NOT submit anything late. Do you really want to risk being put at the bottom of the pile?

Schools have deadlines for a reason. They need time to process your information. If you don’t care enough to get your things submitted in a timely fashion, why should the school say “that’s ok”. If they really didn’t have a deadline date, they wouldn’t publish one.

Do NOT miss the deadlines…just get the stuff in on time.

You misunderstand me.

I am not willfully putting off the Profile. My parents tell me that they need to have their tax forms sent through the mail, meaning they are not currently in my possession. If I do not have these forms, and it is impossible to meet the deadline, will 1-2 days make ED an impossibility!?

Can someone (whoever has the forms) read your parents the numbers off of the tax returns, and then you can plug them into the CSS. It really isn’t that complicated if someone can read them the numbers. You really need to get the CSS online app done by deadline. Sending in the hard copies of the returns can be after that, but I would not send in the online CSS after deadline. They may not consider you for financial aid at all if you don’t meet the deadline.

And just a note to all…when you do your taxes in the future…print out a copy to keep in YOUR possession.

Did your parents file their own tax forms or did someone else do them? If they filed electronically using tax prep software, they should be able to access their return online. If someone else prepared the taxes for them, that someone else should be able to make them a copy…and send it them in time for you to complete the Profile ON TIME.

The Profile only requires a few numbers off a completed 2010 tax return. The rest is anticipated 2011 and best guess for 2012. Take a breath, print out the customized worksheet and just start at the beginning. You can do this!

The MOST important thing is to make your estimates of income/taxes for 2011 as close as possible to what the real numbers will be. Your family should have pay stubs or something that shows year to date income/taxes. They can then extrapolate and add the months of Nov and Dec to what they already have for 2011. Those estimates are important. If there is a big difference, your estimated and final aid could be different. So…make them as close as you can possibly make them.

from css help desk
If you haven’t completed a 2011 federal income tax return but will be filing one, it is recommended that one be completed before the PROFILE Application is filled out. However, if the student’s college(s) or program(s) have an early priority filing date, and completing the tax return is not possible, estimate 2011 income and benefits to the best of your ability using income and tax records from 2010 in addition to salary and benefit records from 2011. Questions that contain tax line references are displayed based on the tax return you or your parents report filing or planning to file for 2011. If you filed a different tax return type in a previous year, or you need additional help estimating, see the Help Desk for more information on estimating, including tips, draft U.S. federal income tax forms, and a U.S. federal income tax line reference table for 2010 and 2011.

What if my mom did not file her taxes during the 2010 year, and now it is already the November 1 deadline and I am not yet prepared to submit the CSS Profile? My mom is going to get her taxes prepared tomorrow, but will it be too late already? I am applying ED btw, I already submitted my application.
