CSS Profile Medical and Dental expenses: insurance premiums paid

I’ve sent the question below to FinaidServices at College board today and I would like the opinion of others in the same situation:

" We have a question about the insurance premiums paid for medical and dental expenses. The CSS profile does not specify which type of insurance premiums paid are allowed (see attached image): Pre-Tax or Pos-Tax?

In our case, my wife pays a portion of the premiums pre-tax from her paycheck and the employer pays the other part. Should we include the portion that my wife pays in the Parental Medical Expenses section of the CSS Profile?"

Thanks!

We never did…but not sure if you can or should…or not.

No.

Can you explain why not? I never have but I have wondered about that.

And…what about the situation where an employee gets a benefit allowance and can use some of it to purchase employer-sponsored health insurance?

Thanks!

Not medical, but my husband received a monthly stipend for a car…rather than have a company car. This was included in his salary on his W-2 form.

When I last completed Profile a number of years ago, the instructions said not to report as a medical expense health insurance premiums that were paid by the employer. When I inquired as to whether this included pre-tax payments subtracted from an employee’s income that were made through an employer’s cafeteria plan, I was told yes.

Thanks. That’s what I always figured and did, but it’s good to know for sure!

I talked to FinaidServices at College Board today and the Lady said to include the portion of the medical/dental insurance premiums “employee paid pre-tax” into the CSS Profile Medical and Dental expenses out of pocket.
