Css Profile- Parent expenses

Hello. One of the questions on the CSS profile says to enter medical and dental expenses a parent paid in 2017 that wasn’t covered by insurance. One of my parents owe a large sum of money due to surgeries but they hadn’t paid it off in 2017 (when they got it) and it’s still not paid off in the current day. Do I include it for 2017 or not at all?

Also, would debt for cars, credit cards, etc. be included as a “special circumstance” for the css profile?

Cars, credit cards and other consumer debt are not viewed as special circumstances. Those are consumer choices.

If you had high unreimbursed medical expenses that you PAID in 2017…and are continuing to pay now…note those.

Do not include it at all. The question wants to know about expenses that have been PAID. According to you, the money owed was not paid in 2017 and has still not been paid.

Generally, no, but for credit card debt it might depend on what the expenses were for.

Ask them how much they paid in 2017 towards those medical expenses. To be considered, they will likely have to show proof that they paid those medical expenses.

Also in terms of a special circumstances consideration…you need to contact the colleges directly. Find out their process for this. Just writing something on the Profile is really going to get you…no where.

Schools will want documentation of the medical procedures, and that they were essential and not elective (in other words, they probably won’t consider elective cosmetic surgery or something like that). They will want to see what your insurance covered…and what you were billed. And most important, they will want to see what you paid.

If you are continuing to pay these bills now, the schools will want to see records of that as well.

Are you hoping that your need based aid will increase substantially because of these medical expenses?
