CSU fees waived for low income???

I got accepted into CSULB
my efc is 0 and i got the max pell grant $5550 and max cal grant for csu $4,884
I was wondering if this money will go towards my tuition or if my tuition fees will be waived since i my efc is 0 and if this will cover my room and board fees.

From what I’ve read and heard about the CSU System, they don’t waive tuition for low income students.

Time to take out some loans bud…

Just a language correction: There’s no such thing as a “max Cal Grant.” Just a Cal Grant (with three different types, but that’s an entirely different conversation). Everyone who qualifies receives the same amount (for the specific Cal Grant they qualify for). It’s not like Pell Grant where the amount is reduced as your EFC goes up.

The only fee waiver is the BOG for CCCs. There is no tuition waiver for the CSUs or the UCs. Your Cal Grant will cover the systemwide fees for the CSUs, though, so you’re technically already covered for those fees. It is specifically earmarked for this. This still leaves the campus fees, however.

CSUs don’t waive tuition for low income nor do they promise to meet full demonstrated financial need. :(

the state university grant which i got says it covers full systemwide fees
what does this mean?
does it mean that it covers all tuition and housing or just tuition?
and if i get this grant do i still get the cal grant and pell grant?

Which Cal Grant do you have? A or B? And are you a freshman?

If you’re a freshman with Cal Grant B, that state university grant is meant to cover the apparent shortfall of Cal Grant B in tuition/fee assistance the freshman year.

If you have Cal Grant A and are a freshman (or above), that’s a bit odd that the state university grant would say it was only for systemwide fees since that’s what Cal Grant A and B covers. One would cancel the other out and the CSUs will often always pick the one that comes from the state (Cal Grant) rather than themselves (state university grant).

Systemwide fees are what they sound like: systemwide. They are the fees required by all colleges within the system (in your case, the CSU system). Each college will add on their own campus fees as well that are separate from the systemwide fees. These (aside from any health insurance cost) are still considered qualified expenses, though.

Yes, you will still receive Pell Grant regardless since it is not earmarked for anything specifically. Note that if you use it for non-qualified expenses (such as room and board) that you will have to report it on your taxes as taxable income.
