I'm a little confused about this financial aid. I'm transferring to Cal State Fullerton in the Fall and I was hoping I would qualify for financial aid to pay for school. While I was attending a community college, I was receiving a fee waiver that paid for my tuition at the community college. I just received my financial aid info from CSUF and I don't qualify for any financial aid, so i have to go with the stafford loans. How can I qualify for a fee waiver at a community college but not at the more expensive cal state school?

Sorry, I think the waiver you received was the Bog which is, to my knowledge, only a JC waiver.

What is your FAFSA EFC?

My EFC is 9598. I’m not sure how it’s so high, because I can really only contribute 500/year at most.

Are you saying that YOU can only contribute $500? Or are you saying that you and your parents can only contribute $500?

Are you a dependent? If so , I don’t understand why you can only contribute $500. You should be able to earn a lot more than that with summer work and part-time work during the school year.

Fee waiver at CC is awarded by Board of Trustees from your school district. CSU has nothing to do with your school district. It belongs to state of California
my 2 cents

Don’t the Cal States have some kind of program similar to the UC Blue and Gold? If so, what is the income cut off for that program?

I am a dependent and I do work full-time. However, I have bills, car payment, rent, a loan that I have to pay off due to a family member and life, which is why I can only contribute soo little. My contribution of $500 was just a number I threw off from the top of my head, but it would not be that far off.

I guess my best option would be to just take the stafford loans. Thanks!

The Board of Governors (BOG) waiver is actually the whole CCC system, not just the specific JC’s district. It is financed by the State of California, not the Board of Trustees for a given JC’s district. And it only waives course/enrollment fees. Campus fees and laboratory fees still must be paid by the student.

I am not aware of a program at the CSUs that is similar to the UC’s Blue&Gold. And even if there were, the OP’s EFC exceeds the fees (which are stated on CSUF’s website as being under $5k) that would be covered by it if it did exist. Blue&Gold only covers fees. It covers nothing else. So if a similar program existed, it would only cover fees which, as mentioned, the OP’s EFC exceeds.

[Financial Aid - Cost of Attending CSUF](<a href=“404: File Not Found - Office of Financial Aid | CSUF”>404: File Not Found - Office of Financial Aid | CSUF)

OP’s EFC exceeds Pell Grant eligibility too. And I can only venture a guess that either income ceiling and/or asset ceiling for Cal Grant was exceeded as well.

Thanks Kender for the correction
