I'm having a hard time deciding. I can't as much information as I'd like to on CSUMB, but most of what I found about CSU Chico is that it's a party school. I'd really like to go into medicine, so I want to ensure that I'm getting a good education above all else--but I'd also like to pick which one would look best on paper (to a potential employer) and has a better reputation. I got accepted as a Bio major for both of them.

Also, does anybody know anyone who goes to either of these? Are they happy? What complaints do they have? Mind that I come from a pretty rural town myself, so I don't think I'll be particularly affected by any lack of adventures. I know it all depends upon the specific person, but I'd like whatever insight I can get. :3

They are both credible schools though Chico is higher ranked by most surveys. They have a longer track record and a much larger campus (3x the student body). (more people have heard of them). Chico is in town, like the whole 90k community grew up around it. MB is out of town and somewhat isolated from the surrounding community. The climate is totally different too. Yesterday, it was 90 in Chico and 60 in Monterey. They really feel quite different. So if any of those factors makes a big difference, go with your gut. You’ll get a credible degree from either.

As far as academic reputation,
For Marine Bio I’d give the nod to Monterey - they have the ocean right there.

For all else, Chico has the edge - buy not by such a margin that you should be miserable just to go there.

US News ranks Chico #5 among western public schools. Monterey is #18 on the same list.

Have you visited either campus? They have very different atmospheres. Chico may have that reputation but there are plenty of serious students there. There will be parties at any school but it is up to you if you want to participate. There will be plenty of people who are not participate. Chico may be rated slightly higher but not enough to make a difference. Where would you be happier for 4 years?

Keep in mind that Monterey Bay is much smaller (5,500) and more intimate than Chico State. Chico State has 15,000+. Both have similar academics. I have known happy students at both. The question on my mind is, do you want a larger school or small school feel?

Just as an update for anyone that was curious, I ended up choosing Chico. (:

I fell in love with it as soon as I went to visit–it’s beautiful, everyone was really nice, and I just really loved the community. I wasn’t too keen on the size of it initially, but everyone I talked to said that the class sizes were usually only ~30, unless it’s a really impacted class. It seems perfect in my eyes; visiting changed my views completely, so thanks to everyone that posted. ^-^

Congrats!
As the parent of another incoming Wildcat freshman, I think you’ll be very happy in Chico.

The campus does a great job of welcoming perspective students. We started with a campus tour a few years ago and came away impressed. Choose Chico day and then their Orientation days have cemented the choice.

I’ll tell you what I tell my son, Get involved early and USE THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO YOU! Academic and career counselors, peer advisors, even tutors. The whole institution wants you to thrive. Let them help you.
