(CSU) the 140 unit maximum?

Does unit credit you get for ap exams automatically have to count towards the max units allowed for graduation?
CSUN says max is 140 units. I have 15 units raked in (all gen ed) from ap exams, so that’s 5 gen ed classes I don’t have to take. I know that means I can take 5 less classes and possibly graduate a semester earlier. But I actually wanted to take some free elective classes in place of those gen ed classes. Would this be 30 units total (I count 15 ap exam gen ed credit + 15 in electives), or am I able to count it as 15 total? I’m hoping it’s the latter so that I make sure I don’t exceed 140…
I hope that makes sense! Sorry if what I’m asking is confusing.

If you do not take the AP credit, then those credit units would not count towards the maximum units.

@Gumbymom If I used the AP credit to avoid taking the correlated gen ed classes and filled that extra space in my schedule with electives, how would the total number of units be counted?

Do AP credits count towards the maximum for CSUs? I know that for UCs they don’t.

According the CSU website, each campus determines how the AP credits are used towards your degree requirements so the best option would be to contact CSUN directly.

https://www.csun.edu/undergraduate-studies/administrative-graduation is the policy in question.

Since it does not specifically mention whether AP credit counts toward the limit, ask directly.

In terms of your situation, if you have 15 units of AP credit applied to general education requirements but take the normal total of 120 units over 8 semesters, including 15 units of free electives in place of the general education requirements you are exempt from with AP credit, you will have 135 units at the end of 8 semesters, so you would not reach the 140 unit limit anyway.
