If a school says you can’t take more than 140 units, do units counted from AP Exams count? I can’t find the answer to this anywhere. At all the CSUs I applied to, my AP Exams get 20 units of GE out of the way. Do those 20 units count into the 140 max, meaning I can only take 120? Or is the 140 max at CSUs only mean you can take 140 units at the college itself, so I can take 140 in addition to the 20 from AP? If anyone knows the answer from experience, has read it online somewhere I’m missing, or knows which department I could contact at a CSU, it would be helpful.
I think what you took in HS don’t matter. But don’t worry now. In either case you will graduate.
My understanding is that depending upon the major degree, you can have up to 120% of the minimum degree units, so if the BA/BS has a 120 unit requirement to graduate than you can have up to 144 units. This is to limit an undergraduate students time at the university, avoid having students change major degree objectives late in their college career and to avoid Super Seniors.
Not all AP courses will have major credit and you have the option of using that AP credit to opt out of a GE/Major pre-req course or not.
My son had 38 units of AP credit that were not all were major applicable, was able to take a few extra courses that were of major interest and still stayed within the maximum # of units for degree.
Once you are accepted and enrolled at a Cal state, you can talk and plan with your advisor a 4 year program to help meet your objectives.
https://www.csulb.edu/student-records/timely-graduation indicates that CSULB has a 144 unit limit, but does not count AP and similar credit toward that limit.
You may want to check each campus specifically for its policy on the matter.
https://www.csun.edu/undergraduate-studies/administrative-graduation is CSUN’s policy, but it does not mention AP credit, so you will have to ask directly.
