CSU to a UC

Hi guys i will be attending CSUEB as a freshman this year. But i want to transfer out either to Cal Poly San Luis or a UC.
Most preferably a UC i wanted to ask the people that have successfully transferred out of an CSU to a UC what did they do? What are some things i should keep in mind through my 2 years at CSUEB. Please don’t mention going to a CC because that is not a option. Thank you

CP SLO is a different animal, the take very few transfers from anywhere - and most of the handful they accept attend a local CC. So, transferring there from any school that’s not a local CC is a long shot.

For UCs, of course you can… you need to take the right classes and have a competitive GPA - perhaps .15 better than the average admit for your major. - which you can find for all the UCs here:
https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major

One thing I’d add, be sure to give EB the college try… attend on-campus events, join a club or two and really engage in the campus. You may not want to leave afterall.

good luck.

Thank you for the information really appreciate it.

Hey there,

I was in a similar position, went to CSULB my freshman year but ended up not liking it and looked into transferring, with SLO and UCSB being my two top options.

I did a ton of research and found that if you want a good chance of transferring to your school of choice then community college is your best bet. I don’t understand why its not an option for you, I don’t need to know, but just understand that if you can make it work and go to community college after a year at CSUEB, then that is your best chance at going to whatever college you want. Think about it.

The other comment isn’t wrong but over simplifies “taking the right classes”. If you aren’t going to a community college and want to complete all of the requirements for a UC transfer, you’ll need to be very smart with class scheduling. Im sure you’ve used assist . org already, but just incase, its a website the shows what community college courses transfer to CSUs and UCs officially. It doesn’t really work for CSU to UC.

You can kinda do a work around by seeing that class A at CSUEB equals class A at a CC, then see if CC class A equals the UC class A (good ol transitive property). This is not 100% as I found out with my math class (business calc at CSULB equals regular calc at CC and regular calc at CC equals regular calc at UCSB, but business calc at CSULB doesn’t really equal regular calc at UCSB, I had to fight for that one with the math department).

So how are you suppose to figure this out? Take the most generic classes you can (like regular calc instead of business calc) and constantly talk with the school you want to transfer to about if classes match up. Transferring from CSU to UC is not built in the system and no one will have a clear cut way to make it work, thats why community college is best. One year at CSU won’t cause too much trouble, then you can take most of your units at a CC where it is stupidly easy to see what you need to take (because thats one of the purposes of CCs, to transfer you out).

Thats what I did, one year at CSULB, one at a CC, and I was accepted to both UCSB and SLO (I was not close to either one, but a high GPA and meeting all class requirements will take you a long way).

As the first post mentioned, give CSUEB a real try. If anything, become involved knowing that your involvement will look good on your future college applications.
