Having some really exceptional students that would be high performers at any of the UCs, as well as CSU, is probably something that is really important to CSU and if there was the appearance that UCs were trying to recruit CSU’s best students I can easily see how it could become a source of friction between the two systems. To preserve good relations, UC schools may have agreed to behave in a manner that does not deprive CSU of its top talent while accepting a small number of good but not great CSU transfers each year.

Come to a CCC. The reason I say this is because the biggest problem for CSU transfers is course articulation. UCs have ironclad agreements with community colleges, and have no such thing with CSUs. If all of your courses transfer and you can take all the corresponding courses then you are in a good position. The problem is, that is rarely the case. If you’re serious about transferring to a UC, go to a CCC when your year is over. At a CCC you could presumably guarantee yourself admission to a UC. Another problem is priority. If you have let’s say, 1 or 2 pre-reqs missing and a 3.8 GPA and a community college applicant has the exact same thing, they will pick the CC student every time becuase you are already at a 4-year college that you chose to attend, while they are not.

I’m waitlisted to UC Davis from a CSU right now with a reported GPA of 3.4, I’ll inform you if I actually get in. Although even if I do, it will be a very worst-case scenario for me to transfer, because the CSU that I currently attend is academically on par with Davis and I could easily graduate from here within three years, whereas there will definitely be course articulation issues in attending Davis. That being said, it’s possible, but the odds are stacked against you.

Hey I am about to be in the situation as you sometime in the future. I’m about to attend SDSU this fall, but I’ve been wanting to go to a UC in the first place. So I was thinking also of transferring to a ccc my 2nd year, then transfer to a UC 3rd year. Tell me or update this post on how everything goes for you, and probably share any advice and experiences pf how things went I wish you good luck!
