CSU to CC to UCLA

I graduated high school in June 2020 and committed to Sac State. However, I decided that i’m dropping out of Sac after fall 2020 and finish my spring semester at a CC. Throughout high school, i acquired 42 units at my local cc so I decided to apply to UCLA and UCSD for fall ‘21 because i would meet the requirements by spring ‘21. Will i be considered a CSU transfer even though i’m finishing spring 2021 at a CC? Also, I currently have all As in all my major prep courses but I might get a C on this freshman seminar class that everyone had to take at sac state so how much will that impact my admission? thanks so much in advance!

It’s a bit of a tricky question. On the surface you would qualify as a CCC xfer since they say

A CCC transfer student is one who has completed at least 30 semester (45 quarter) UC-transferable units at one or more California community colleges. The last college the student attended in a regular session (fall/spring or fall/winter/spring) before admission to a UC campus must be a California community college.

The reason this isn’t a slam-dunk is most of your CCC units were completed in HS. UC makes it clear that a graduating HS student with dual-enrollment credits must apply as a frosh even if they have earned enough CC credits to be considered a college junior. So at least in that circumstance dual enrollment units are treated a bit different than those earned after HS. Perhaps they also do this in counting units to see who qualifies as a CCC xfer.

So to me, there are 2 questions you should contact admissions at LA and San Diego to ask:

  1. do you qualify as a CCC transfer?

  2. what is the impact of the dual-enrollment courses on how many units you can earn at UC? In other words do they count towards the maximum number of units you can earn at UC (which means you have around 2 years of college left) or are there different rules since they were taken in HS?

Regarding (2) you may want to be done with college as soon as possible and use the dual enrollment units to get there, which you can do. But you might want to be just an ordinary 2nd-year college student and spend 3 years at UC, which is why I suggest asking. Those with lots of AP credit have this option when they xfer after one year, you may too.

thank you this helped a lot! i’ll definitely contact their admission office and ask about it

Some data that should help you ascertain your chances.

admit rate and gpa data by major and campus

use the TR GPA byYr tab to see the difference between transfer GPAs from, CSUs vs CCs to each UC.

LA and SD are really selective no matter where you are transferring from… you have a good shot if your transfer GPA is in the upper range for your major.

I’d suggest you also apply to a couple less competitive UCs so you are sure to have a place to make progress next year.

good luck
