CSU to CC

I’m currently a freshman at CPSLO and I’m not happy here. Too expensive for my family, location isn’t ideal, environment sucks and cliquey. I’m a biochem major and i hate it. And I went in knowing it would be difficult to switch but told myself to stick it out. I’ll probably be eligible to switch second year but I don’t plan on staying here at all so now I’m just taking GEs to get my credits. I decided to finish my first year and then take a leave of absence to go to a CC as a business major next school year with the possibility of transferring to SJSU since I’m a local and would save my family a signicsntly amount of money.

So really I’m looking for guidance. Has anyone else gone through this before?? What did you do? And would it look bad since I’m technically dropping out? Anything would help!!!

You really do not transfer to a community college. You finish out your year at SLO, apply now to your local CC and start either Summer or Fall attending the CC. You will want to meet with a transfer advisor at your CC and if you are only taking GE’s at SLO, these should be transferable to SJSU when you ready to apply, but always have your transcript evaluated at the CC.

You can use assist.org and type in the CC you will be attending along with SJSU as your transfer target. It will list all the courses needed for transfer to SJSU Business.

Best of luck.

the biz program at SLO is really excellent. I’d strongly suggest you investigate switching your major. I know they make it ‘hard’ but, typically, that means take these classes and maintain a decent GPA. Go talk to an advisor and see what it takes before making up your mind.

Going from a CSU to a CC is as easy as @Gumbymom says. The biggest problem with leaving CPSLO is the quarter system. You will have some imperfect fits in your units once they are recalculated into semester format. You may need to re-take classes that you have already passed since one quarter is only 2/3 of a semester. Freshman Composition classes are a prime example. One term at CPSLO does not equal a semester of units, but there is also no way to take a partial unit F.C. class to make up the difference at most semester schools. Not a big deal, but it might be frustrating.
