CSU to CCC

Hello all,

I am a student from the Sacramento area in California, and is currently a Sophomore at California State University, Stanislaus. I am a Pre-nursing student, and have completed about 30 units so far. I have a 3.2 GPA with at least 2 semesters worth of classes to take before applying to the program.

Since last semester, I had been thinking about returning home to my local community college to pursue nursing. The reason for this is mainly due to financials. It would be cheaper for me to take the required course needed for nursing programs. Also, getting into a program for nursing at my local community college would cost less than if i were to stay. As a first generation students with little to no financial support (both of my parents are unemployed due to health reasons/ unable to adapt to the society (they do not know english)), the thought of relying on loans for school discourages me. What also scares me is that if i do not get into the nursing program, the loans i borrowed would feel as if it went to waste.

So i am asking you, what should i do?

I really want to go towards nursing because it’ll benefit me in many ways. I really want to give my parents a life that they’ve never had.

What are you trying to achieve? Associate? Bachelor? CCC and then transfer later on again?

Since I am at a 4 year right now, I am going towards a BSN. But if I do choose to go back to a community college, I will go towards the ADN route, work for a few, and then go back to get my Bachelors. What I am saying is, I am in no rush to get my degree. But in my current situations, what’ll benefit me more?

I think there are many issues for you to consider.

  1. How much will the difference in salary be? Most likely you will make $10k+ more with a bachelor
  2. With an associate you can probably work two years earlier
  3. CSU is a pricier tuition, but you also get more out of it.

In my opinion I wouldn’t settle for an associate. The higher cost of a CSU is going to pay itself off really quickly. The main downside is that you have to can only work two years later. Is CC a better option short term? Yes. Long term? No.
