CSU to Private to CCC to UC

Hi guys,
educational background- first semester at a csu, second semester at a CA private (decent grades at both), started summer 2017 at my ccc and as of end of fall completed 18 units with a 4.0. Completed 6 more units over January intercession with a 4.0. Currently enrolled for spring.

Questions- 1. Will I be considered a ccc applicant? I think this should be the case, but just want to confirm.

  1. How would the gpa that they use for my admission be calculated? Would classes at the csu and private be considered UC transferable?
  2. I'm a musician and have received grades for 5 units of ensembles/lessons from my first year. Would these units be used in the gpa calculation?
  3. This one scares me. I didn't know that UC's preferred English be completed by the end of fall. I'm currently taking the English 2 equivalent. How big of a deal is this?
  4. I would really love to go to Berkeley for their college of natural resources, Major: Society and Environment which for fall 2017 had the admit range 3.60-3.79 My Gpa (if every course I've taken is used in calculation excluding January intercession): 3.72 (3.69 w/o music units) Do I have a good shot?

Thank you for reading!

  1. Yes, as long as you have 30+ transferable units (so if you're taking 6+ this semester?) you'll be a CCC transfer.
  2. Your classes may be transferable or they may not be. For the CSU, you can use assist.org to see if your classes transfer but I am not sure about how for private. I'm not sure about GPA but I'm assuming cum. for all transferable classes.
  3. If it's transferable yes, otherwise no I don't think.
  4. No way to know, really. Depending on the school you'll probably be ok.
  5. Assuming all requirements met, yes.

I wouldn’t worry about the English requirement TOO much. It really depends on the situation. If you have been able to achieve high grades so far, including an A in your previous English classes, and you can give admissions the sense of confidence that you will be able to perform well in the critical thinking class, they should be willing to overlook it. It’s a holistic review at the end of the day. Now if you’re doing your math and English requirement in spring with a borderline GPA, then that might cause some concern
As far as what goes into your UC gpa, it is literally everything that is transferrable to UC. Have you checked with your counselor to see what is transferrable? They should be able to tell you what is and what isn’t.
And for the music classes, it really depends on if its transferrable or not. Again, check with your counselor.
The GPA is decent, especially for that particular major. It really depends tho on whether you have finished IGETC and your major prereqs. If you haven’t finish either, your GPA doesn’t mean as much.
BTW how did you find what the average GPA was for your major for UCB? I’ve been trying to find that but all I have been able to find is the average GPA by majors for ALL UC campuses.

Thank you both so much for responding!

@ericbadmon - Thank you! That’s exactly the kind of info I was wondering about regarding the english requirement, makes me feel more at ease. I’ll definitely go to a counselor to try and find out about the transferable courses. As for my prereqs, I completed all of them this past fall at the ccc so I’m certain they’re transferable. Really appreciate your response!

As for the each individual major’s GPA by campus, here you go!- https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major

Plus, your last regular year (fall/winter/spring or variation) has to be at a CCC and no other school to get priority. You have done that.

Second English can be done last term unless it’s required by fall for TAG.
