I am currently a Cal Poly Pomona 2nd year History major hoping to transfer. I am aware I have no priority and my chances are slim because i am a CSU student and not in CC.
My first year GPA: 2.81. (yes very low)
Spring '17: 3.35 / Fall '17:3.42. - my first two quarters (F’16 & W’17) were not too good
Current overall GPA is 2.98. (decent but not great)
Major GPA: 3.25
I am actively involved in 3 on-campus clubs, am a middle school social science tutor, a sunday school teacher assistant, part-time worker, and will be taking 20 units my next two quarters.
Applied: UCSB / UCI
I’d like to hear your opinion on my chances. I mostly started this thread so others can get an idea of the process and outcomes in case they are in a similar position. I will post my outcomes when the time comes.
An under 3.0 Transfer GPA will make both those schools unlikely.
Here is a UC Transfer GPA admit range for a History major at both schools:
UCI: 3.20-3.73
UCSB: 3.35-3.80
You might want to consider UCR which had a 2.91-3.52 Admit GPA range or UC Merced at a 2.93-3.51 range.

The admit ranges are as listed above but on the website it also states “the 25th to 75th percentile (pct) indicate the range of GPAs for the middle half of the admits. In other words, 25 percent of the admits have a GPA lower than the 25th percentile figure, and 25 percent of the admits have a GPA higher than the 75th percentile figure.” So there are admitted GPAs above and below those listed.
Regardless my GPA is low.
One reason I have an un-decent GPA is because I got a ‘D’ on my math class. I really should have retaken it my Fall quarter but didn’t. I am currently retaking the class winter quarter and although admissions do not calculate winter grades into the admission decision I’ve spoken with a very kind admission counselor and she told me to “remain eligible, it would be extremely helpful if you could report your stats grade as soon as it is received.”
When retaking a class, they only take the higher grade earned into account and do not calculate the lower grade in. Hence, If at the very least I earn a “C” in the course, my GPA will be at a 3.0 whereas an “A” would have me at a 3.2.
Also, my first quarter at CPP I took only 13 units and now I am taking 20.
so my decision was received April 1 and was denied.
I contacted an admissions adviser to find out why I was denied and obviously it was due to my low reported GPA (2.98)
I plan to appeal my decision (to report the grade change as well as adding new and separate information) as I spoke to another adviser who encouraged me to do so and include my up-to-date transcript as I have increased my GPA to an overall 3.23 as of Winter Quarter 2017. Winter grades aren’t taken into consideration but I had repeated a course and so that grade can be taken into account and replace the previous one.
Again, the appeal acceptance rate is even harsher than the regular transfer rate, let alone the CSU to UC transfer rate but I have gotten this far and will give it one last attempt.
Update: I’ve submitted my appeal letter 4/10/18 and it was recieved 4/16. I got incontact with a UCSB counselor and they confirmed that appeal decisions will “be reviewed after June 1st 2018 which is the deadline for admitted students to respond to our offer” and they “will not know how many spaces [they] will have available until then.”
So I’m stuck in another waiting game. Still waiting on a response from UCI.
Today, April 27 around 3pm I was wait listed for UCI!
on my Tau I originally had submitted a gpa of 2.98… days before the deadline I submitted my winter course grades … i am not sure if they took my winter grades into account which raised my gpa to a 3.22 since I assume they only take into account up to fall course grades.
I am unsure if they waitlisted me as 2.98 gpa applicant or 3.22… so I am not sure if I should appeal…
what seems to be MANY MONTHS LATER
JUNE 29, Admitted to UCI!!!
I gave up after UCSB denied me because it seemed it was the “easier” school to apply into … I am in shock to think I actually got accepted! it IS possible!
