Did all of the decisions come out because my portal didn’t update to anything? What does that mean?
Remember that the stats of CC members tend to be higher than the general applicant pool.
I think the reputation of the the high school does have a lot to do with admission at CU and every 3.4 gpa is not created equal. My nephew’s stats weren’t eye popping high, but his high school is known for rigger and he was admitted to engineering without calc or advanced physics in hs. A friend’s son had a 34 ACT and high robotics team honors but didn’t get into engineering because of a 3.1 gpa at an average hs.
@collegemomjam, yes, they all apply to other private schools for engineering, but also to other Colorado engineering schools (Mines, CSU) and OOS publics (Purdue, Penn state). While CU has a high cost for instate students, it’s still cheaper than most OOS publics or privates.
Welcome new Buffs!
No private schools for S19 but some OOS publics in addition to CSU. No interest in Mines due to size. We are full pay and in-state for CU. Many of his OOS options are much less expensive.
Not sure why the anger at low OOS merit. My in-state tippy-top stat kid is not getting that much either. This is well known about CU and Colorado public schools in general and should not be a surprise at all. Many OOS publics do not provide great merit and CU at least spells out the parameters for their merit. The merit S19 received has been exactly as anticipated based on website.
Either way, congratulations to all those accepted! S19 will likely not be able to make a final decision till later in the application season but is excited to have CU in the mix.
@collegemomjam yes some of the top students do head OOS to top privates, (and therefore that is why the Boettcher scholarship was created) my own DD decided on UChicago, while her best friend went to Vanderbilt. Just so you know if you make (this is a big generalization) over about $150k a year it’s going to be progressively more expensive to go to a top “meets full need” private college then an in state school. $150k is about the break even point for many of the top privates vs in state. Again the $150k number can vary significantly depending on the private school you get accepted to.
i got into the CMCI program jan 11! I
@CU123 Thanks for the info!!!
My biggest issue is if my OOS son can handle the engineering program…I think he has the stats (he’s a junior) to get in but it might be too rigorous for him. He is going to want the full college experience, i.e., a full social life as well. I am thinking he is better off in business, but he has developed a more techy interest lately. Obviously it is up to him and we can see if he gets into the engineering program (if he decides to apply) and take it from there. I’m guessing he can always switch to a different major but I hate for him to start off on the wrong foot, especially far form home.
Our DS is at UChicago and loves it! DD just got into UC Boulder but is waiting on more decisions.
Admitted to political science with 3.33 GPA (uw) and a rather weak junior year in comparison to freshman and sophomore years. 1200 SAT. But I did take a lot of hard classes throughout high school.
@mountainmomof3
How about because SAT is in the 99th percentile…
Website says that Presidential award says it goes to the “top 1-3 percent of applicants” yet OOS applicants with 1580 SAT’s and high GPAs were only given Chancellors, not Presidential. There’s a big difference between $25K over 4yrs (Chancellors) and $55K (Presidential).
FYI, this year the amounts for the awards, and specific requirements were not clear on the website. Other state universities publish a specific chart. So yes, we were hopeful for the Presidential with high stats.
@sunnyschool - have you considered contacting the admissions office? You could ask them to review your student’s stats for consideration of the higher merit award. It is not unheard of for a school to re-evaluate a prospective student and the worst they can say is no.
I will give you that the OOS awards are not as clear as in-state (which has a very clear chart). Top 1-3% of OOS students is a loose description that probably gives them some leeway in their decisions and may also allow them to look at other factors - essays, EC’s, etc. However, I guess my point is that CU is just not known to be that generous to in-state kids or OOS kids. Never has been.
I just posted a thread about the few things that worry me about CU, anyone who is interested please go check it out and give any input you may have.
Son admitted to Engineering, OOS
Chancellor’s scholarship
SAT: 1530
GPA: 3.82/4.41
OK EC’s
@cate1121 can you post the thread link?
@collegemomjam This is the link for my “questions” thread where I basically ask about some of the regularly asked about concerns of Boulder. I hope this is what you meant! Thanks!
DS accepted
OOS
Pre-engineering
3.4/3.6
33 ACT
Chancellors Scholarship & A&S Honors
@cate1121 yes, thanks so much!
Congrats @Salemlaxmom!
I know I should know this, but what is pre-engineering? Does that mean that they want you to take some prereqs first to make sure you are a match for engineering? Sorry if this was asked already.
No, in the pre-engineering program you take the same classes as those admitted to the engineering school, you just aren’t in the college of engineering for admission purposes. If you successfully complete the pre-engineering courses, you slip right in with the rest of the class for later years. You might even get to pay less since engineering costs more (but I’m not sure)
My nephew just completed his degree. As a first year he lived in the engineering community and that was helpful. He was a little ‘too’ into the college scene and partied too much as a fall freshman. Didn’t do well in Calc I and had to retake it, but still graduated on time. I think he got a lot of support from the engineering LLC/dorm, and I think it was good for him to live away from most of his friends.
He also had his first year courses assigned and there was a group that all had the same schedule. He (and the group) had a course in the engineering building and 10 minutes later one that started in Chem140, which is probably a 1/2 mile jog uphill. Anyone and everyone I shared that with said “It can’t be done” and it can’t, but somehow that group of 20 or so students did it.
Accepted: Environmental Engineering
OOS
ACT: 25
GPA: 3.82
Tons of ECs and dual enrollment classes
It seems like I’m the only person who hasn’t received news about admission yet. Is anyone else waiting? I’m from out of state, maybe that’s why?
OOS D still waiting as well
