@mountainmomof3 Thank You!
Yikes, son got financial aid estimate, and besides his Chancellor’s and engineering scholarship, we have the privilege of taking up to $51K in loans per year! Even though I have a six figure 529, that ain’t gonna work. Do people really have that kind of money to go here OOS?
@FLWahoo Im in the exact same boat. I would have absolutely loved to go to Boulder, but I am going to an in-state school because Boulder is literally double the cost for the same education.
Got the admissions package today…and the financial aid email…the tiny $6250/year merit barely makes a dent – especially when they will probably raise tuition a few thousand each year. If they actually want good students to come, they need to offer a better merit aid package.
Note: We have heard nothing on Engineering scholarships - do those come later?
Not many state flagship schools give much FA or merit for OOS (or even in state) and the aid they do give is VERY competitive, although you can make the case that in state comes with FA (referred to as in state tuition). There are exceptions, like UVA.
@CU123, I guess you’re right. I had assumed it was worth trying some OOS public schools where my son’s major was highly ranked, where his stats were well above the 75 percentile, and where his EFC was low. I had been worried about a showdown about stretching financially for a school like CU vs. a full-ride at our perfectly fine in-state flagship, but spending $100K and going another $110K into debt for CU makes it a non-starter. Maybe grad-school!
@sunnyschool, the “good news” is that I think CU has a policy of locking in tuition for the 4 years, so you wouldn’t have to worry about the increases. And the engineering scholarship my son received was automatic based on his regular application, and not the other scholarship app that is due in Feb. The $10K sounds great, but it’s really a drop in the bucket, even on top of the $25K Chancellor’s.
@FLWahoo Thanks re the Eng Scholarship. The website does imply it’s automatic and if you get the Chancellors, then you should get the Eng scholarship. That’s how I read it, but we haven’t heard anything about the Eng one, so I thought maybe it comes out after 2/15. Agree it’s a drop in the bucket for OOS anyway, so we haven’t called yet.
@PetuniaRose1 @gjkilen
Yes, my D also applied to early action but was put into regular decision. We emailed admissions and their response was that although the application was complete for the early action deadline, they did not receive her SAT scores from the college board in time to be reviewed for the early action decision. So, thank you college board for ruining this for many students.?
@805Mommp I know you would probably just be barking up a tree, but if you have the email or receipt showing that you paid for SAT score sends well before the deadline, maybe someone at CU will listen to you. If your D is a clear admit and really wants CU, why not try? if your D is borderline, it’s probably best not to bother admissions for a quicker response. Good luck!.
Just an update - Illinois, got my snail mail Thursday! (Feb 7)
I’m still waiting on my mail, but all this snow in WA is probably slowing everything down lol
Update: My son got his admissions packet in the mail today here in Florida!!
No snail mail acceptance packets here in SoCal yet, but S19 has already signed up to attend CU and he applied for housing the first day it was available.
My daughter’s packet arrived in Seattle today.
My son got his packet Saturday but received his formal acceptance at end of January. S19 has already committed and applied for housing on the opening day of applications. OOS NJ Arts & Science Physiology major.
My son got into CU boulder honors (computer science thru Arts/Sciences) but hasn’t made any decisions yet and we’ll be visiting in April along with other schools…not sure where this is on his list yet but 1) does anyone know anything about the TAM (technology Arts Media program – which is what he’d want to combine comp sci with) 2) RE; HOUSING – I’d be willing to make a deposit to reserve housing since it goes by sign up date but can you sign up for housing withOUT committing to the school right now? Any insight appreciated.
@babysweetpea I believe you need to have a student ID assigned to you and access to the CU portal with login credentials in order to fill out the housing application. When we filled out the housing application it required a lot of information from my son. It is worth a call to the housing department. Good luck!
Yes you can submit a deposit to housing without committing, you will lose the deposit of course.
I believe you have to accept the school ($200 deposit) and then apply for housing ($300 deposit). Housing deposit refundable I believe if you notify by May 15th. I think school deposit you can get back too although not sure of the deadline for that.
$200 Enrollment deposit not refundable if student decides to enroll at a different school. Refundable on graduation or withdrawal from CU. Was worth it for D to get priority housing in central campus halls especially since only waiting on reaches.
