My son was also deferred from Engineering. We are OOS.
UW GPA was : 3.5
W GPA was 3.85
ACT 34
Debate team and extensive volunteer work
We are hoping he has a good chance in the RD round as CU Boulder was among his top 4 schools.

Son accepted yesterday into business school with Chancelorā€™s Scholarship and invitation to honors program in BS . OOS (NJ) 4.4 W GPA; National Honor Society; Silver medal National Spanish Exam; Test optional; all-boys Catholic prep school; Handful of APā€™s; Quality but def not quantity community service; Excellent sports accolades - county & state recognition; school team is nationally ranked; captain of his club team that has played and trained internationally; Ski & Snowboard Club; Founder of new sports club at school; Good recs; Thought essays nailed it
Still confused though on scholarship offer. The Chancelorā€™s Scholarship is a four-year amount, correct? The letter didnā€™t say but I found it somewhere on school site. Confused about whether an applicant still needs to fill out the scholarship application formā€¦Any ideas appreciated.

No I think he just gets Chancellor so if he attends, it will be applied to his bursar bill each year. Nothing else to do.

I have the same scholarship and the letter did say it was just surrounded by a bunch of nonsense. The 25k will be split into about 6k per year automatically.

Donā€™t be too concernedā€¦with most universities more than 50% of early applicants are deferred to RD pool. CU has received an increase in applicants this year, so lots of students have been deferred

D was accepted into Engineering with 20k scholarship.

Sounds similar to me- but your SAT stats are higher. OOS Also an athlete (lacrosse, basketball, skiing), work in construction. Chancellorā€™s award. Boulder is one of my top choices- just unsure about finances. expensive for OOS.

My son applied to aerospace, accepted into Exploratory Studies. Says he can transfer sophomore year into aerospace. Any insight into that path?

Same for us.

Daughter was accepted direct into Aerospace. Anyone know the difference and if there are benefits to starting in Exploratory Studies?

Aerospace one of the most competitive majors at Boulder. Your daughter got the golden ticket. If thatā€™s what she wants to do, she is right where she needs to be.

Thanks. She got into Aero at Purdue and GT as well. And ME at Caltech. Waiting on Michigan today to MIT RD to make the final decision.

She kindly just corrected me and told me i need to pay more attention! You are correct. She was accepted to COE with the Presidential Scholarship at Purdue. You can see who the smarter one is in our household!

IIRC he will need a 2.7 gpa to transfer into the engineering school, and that seems very manageable but only about 25% of the exploratory studies students make it. Plus they tend to be at the bottom of the class by GPA which makes it tough to get the best internships.

I think the plan is great for a kid that had some hiccups in HS, but is ready to buckle down and really focus. For typical college freshmen that struggle to adjust and sample the social scene it ends up being a waste of time. Also, if they donā€™t make it into engineering they need to have a back up plan. They probably wonā€™t have the GPA for Leeds school of business, so the back up major needs to be in Arts & Sciences.

If it seems like Iā€™m negative about the program, you are right. I watched two students try it 3 years ago, and one made it with a low gpa and the other ended up in A&S with a 2.5 GPA. Both parents have mentioned it was a mistake.

Great perspective. I have similar concerns. He got into ASUā€™s aerospace which is a good program and probably less competitive. Trying to decide if it is a better environment for him.

I heard from a student last year, who like my son applied and was admitted to exploratory with a generous scholarship but then offered placement into the aerospace program weeks later after others declined. Iā€™d feel better about that. Donā€™t want to be in position where my son has to transfer to another university after year 1 or struggle in the wrong environment.
