Hi,

I am trying to decide between University of Colorado at Boulder and University of Pittsburgh. I will be going into Chemical Engineering and plan on doing Study Abroad and Co-Op at each school to get an Int'l Eng. Certificate. I would be in the Honors programs at each school. CU-Boulder will be $90K more over a 4-year span. I am looking for any opinions, pro's, con's, anything about either school.

Your help is graciously appreciated!

Thanks

$90K more! No way, imo, is CU-Boulder worth that much more if you are going just on quality. Pitt, as an overall institution, is ranked ahead of CU in almost every domestic and international ranking out there. In US New’s engineering rankings CU is 35th and Pitt is 51st, with a ton of ties in between, so they actually aren’t that far apart (4 actual slots and 0.4 difference on their peer assessment score). Their engineering schools, overall, including the graduate component, are even closer (39 vs 48). Neither CU or Pitt are in US News’ top 25 ChemE programs. If you like Boulder better and money is not an object, sure, go where you’ll be happiest. Boulder is a cool area, and very outdoorsy. Pitt is a lot more urban of a campus, but the city has a huge student population and has a tremendous amount of stuff going on right around the university.

FYI, Pitt just spent $90 million upgrading the primary engineering facilities. I think its fair to say it is an up-and-coming engineering school receiving a lot of attention from the university.

I agree there is NO WAY Colorado is worth the extra cost.
