Thanks for the info. My D just declined Hillsdale so if that’s where you want there will be at least one spot. Good luck to you! Hilsdale is a great school as is Nortre Dame. These acceptances are so random. She did get into Boston College so at least that’s a Catholic option for her. My question is how does a kid get accepted into a Catholic school ranked 31 and an Ivy ranked 9 but wait listed at Catholic University with an 86 percent acceptance rate when she’s a devout Catholic and its all over her application? She liked Catholic University and loved the location but now she is not feeling wanted and would rather go somewhere she is wanted from the start. Catholic University was a great fit for her and is a great place, but it seems too late now with Honors college spots filling and scholarships given out. It makes me sad.

mommidwest, Sounds like your D should have been a shoe-in w good merit $, or at least the most they give ( not counting the 5 full). Did your D try directly speaking with someone in admissions, if she really wants it, it can’t hurt to ask. My S graduated 3 years ago and we loved CUA.

Ok just happened to open the family email (we all share at our house) and my D got into Harvard! But she got waitlisted at CUA with an 86 percent acceptance rate. The funny thing is she is a really involved Catholic and she wanted to study at CUA and had her application in by early December. Go figure!

Congratulations to you and your daughter on the Harvard acceptance! You must be sooo proud of your daughter and all the hard work she has done to gain acceptance to such a prestigous university!!

As far as Catholic goes perhaps she applied after most of the spots were filled, or perhaps they felt that Catholic was just a safety school for her. When they saw that she was applying to ivies, they may have decided to save the spaces and money for others. Unfortunately from what you say that is not so in your daughters case. You are saying that she would rather attend Catholic. When your daughter interviewed, do you think that her strong desire to attend catholic came up?

Who knows I may be wrong…but in any case, CONGRATULATIONS! I am sure that if your daughter really wants to attend Catholic and she contacts them that she will get in…Good Luck! Keep us posted!

mommidwest

This is erp1821’s mom - I’m an alumni of CUA and happen to agree with ktharris. I think that they thought your daughter was using CUA as a safety school and was trying to award those students who seemed more likely to attend. It doesn’t make sense but it does happen. I absolutely loved Catholic and DC during my college years (80-84). DC offers so much and Catholic is a great place for a young faith filled Catholic.

If CUA is your daughter’s #1 choice - I would have her call and talk directly to admissions herself. I can’t imagine they would turn away such a bright young lady.

Also, congratulations on your daughters acceptance to Harvard. What a wonderful achievement. These two colleges are completely different and definitely attract very different students. Your daughter truly needs to decide which school is a better fit - and if it’s Catholic - then fight for it. I know that she feels “not wanted” - but I can assure you that it was not a personal decision. The admissions office has nothing to do with the professors or students, so once she is on campus, I’m sure she will feel very wanted!!! CUA was a great experience for me and I’m still best friends with all the friends that I met there – we still all get together even though we are scattered all over the country.

May I ask what your daughter wants to major in? Catholic is very good for some majors, specifically; Architecture, Engineering, Nursing, Music/Drama, and Political Science.

My daughter is a senior and we have been through this crazy college process – she was admitted to all her reach schools and wait listed at one school that we considered safety/target. She loves Catholic and DC, but it did not offer the curriculum she wanted - so she didn’t apply.

Hope this helps - Good Luck

Financial Aid

Has anyone received their financial aid package?

My daughter applied EA way back in October and filed FAFSA on January 1st. We have not received any financial aid award yet. I called 2 weeks ago and the financial aid office said that I needed to provide copies of my tax returns and W-2s. I was a tad frustrated, as nobody had let us know that we needed to do this. I sent the paperwork overnight mail and still have received nothing. My daughter called and was told that it was not done yet and they couldn’t say when it would be???

This has been such a loooooong process.

I was admitted EA and just received my financial aid in the mail a few days ago. The letter is dated March 25th.

Odd, I didn’t have to provide tax returns or W-2s. Just the FAFSA.

Dear Mommidwest,

I also went to CUA and found it, overall, a very mediocre school, with the exception of some assorted programs that are first rate (music, drama, architecture and nursing). Too many of the kids there (particularly the ones from DC. MD and VA) are not serious about school and just drink from Wednesday night to Sunday.

The honors program, however, is pretty good. If she cannot get into the honors program, there is no point in going there. If you can go to Harvard or BC, than that obviously a better choice. While DC is a great college city, so is Boston.

If she wants to get the DC experience, she can always come down in the summer and do an internship or go to Georgetown for graduate school.
