I am a current senior with a 4.07 Weighted GPA with the following breakdown:
6 Bs(2 in AP Classes, 4 in Honors)
and everything else(6 APs and rest Honors) an A, A-, or A+.
Now, would my cumulative GPA fluctuate given my senior year grades? For example, If all my grades this year are all A’s, would colleges take that into the cumulative GPA? For example, if I have a 4.5 Weighted GPA this year, would that factor into the 4.07 and average out to be a 4.2 ish Weighted? Conversely, if I get a 3.9 Weighted, would my 4.07 Weighted go down? Finally, will colleges take this GPA(senior year+cumulative) into account when doing admissions?
Is it just me or is it amazing (in a bad way) how may questions we get on this site from students with a high GPA that don’t know how to calculate a GPA?
Most likely your colleges will get an updated grade report from your GC to that they can use in their final decision. The range that you are taking about are not major changes. If you had a 4.0 Fresh-Junior year and a 2.0 1st semester Senior year, that would be different.
If you applied ED or EA, then they will be looking at your GPA based on Fresh-Jr. only. Most decisions come out prior to sending in your mid year or full year senior grades. You will still send them in - but they won’t factor into the decision making because the decision has already been made.
If you are applying RD “regular decision” then yes, your first semester senior grades will factor into your cumulative GPA for their review.
The final year grades will not factor in as far as colleges are concerned - they will just be used to see if are keeping up in general.
All grades will be used to figure out what GPA you graduate with. But for some schools like mine - awards are given according to 7 semesters of high school since there is usually so much senior slide.
To figure out your actual GPA and how much fluctuation you would have - you have to know how your school weights each course. Google around - there are some good GPA calculators.
Also, most colleges will use their own method to calculate your GPA since every high school weights (or doesn’t even weight) differently. There are a few that use your highest (weighted) GPA as is (Indiana does this) but not many. If you google the colleges to which you are applying and how they calculate high school GPA, you can usually find this information.
