CUNY Baruch College

Yes I think i'll be going to Baruch. I'm deciding between that and BU. . I live in NY and I requested transcript from my counselor already.

is Baruch your final choice?

When i graduated from high school, most of my friends went to Baruch but after a year, everyone transfered out and went to Buffalo University, Binghamton or Stoney Brook. I am also transferring out of CUNY this term. I hate the idea of traveling and will be attending Buffalo this Fall.

redlineSI, I'm thinking to transfer to UBuffalo this Fall too! What major are you? I'm going to take Finance.

As you might know, the finance major in Buffalo isn't actually finance major. Unlike accounting, finance is just one of the concentrations from Business Admin major. I read some other threads on CC, and a student said that compare to the finance major, accounting major at UB is much much better (same thing at Baruch). I'm leaning towards UB because I want to have the normal-college-life while I'm in college. So, I was thinking, should I change my major to accounting?

I'm still freshman right now. I'll be a sophomore next semester. Finance & Accounting have mostly the same pre-req. So, it's still possible for me to change my major if I want to.

Which one is better, in term of job prospects, accounting or finance? I'm not that interested in IB like everyone in this site. I like to learn economics, psychology, and I'm pretty good at Math. I found career as a quant is interesting, but I don't want to limit myself to only that particular career.

I believe my knowledge about quant is limited, but as far as I know, you need to get at least Master Degree (in financial engineering) to really able to do work as a "quant". It takes time, and maybe you won't have a competitive salary while getting your way to be a "quant".

With accounting degree, you can take CPA test and become CPA (or CMA or CIA or whatever you want). Is it a good choice to have an accounting degree as a step stone to be a "quant"? I'm sorry if it sounds stupid. Any suggestions welcome. Thx

My intended major will be Industrial Engineering and duel major with Economics.

Your still a freshmen so you have plenty of time switch majors. Buffalo will do a DARS report for you which will tell you which credits transfer. Also you should speak with any counselor at Buffalo because they are really helpful. Call up the Business department and they are pleased to help you. You can also speak with the head of the department if you have any questions.

I thought accounting requires a lot of quant skill no? Anyway having extra degrees wont hurt but helps you a lot. It separates you from everyone else. It will make you sell when applying for jobs.

There is a position called Quantitative analysis and these people are math majors.

Also, you're not allowed to have cars at Baruch. This may have some impact in your decision; I don't know if it matters, but you will be living on the subway.

^ yea what he said. It cost about $15 dollars a hour to park in Manhattan.

I do not understand. why is it not allowed ?

I don't know, but I looked it up and it said in fine, bold print, "students are not allowed to keep cars." Can someone else clarify this?

There are no parking lots in the cuny system. People find parking on the streets and now imagine finding one in NYC.

NYC has one of the best mass transit programs in the country. I commuted from Long Island, taking the Long Island Rail Road into Penn Station and then either took the train or walked to Baruch. You don't need a car. In fact, a car would be a hindrance.

Can people elaborate? I am currently interested in a career as a quant. Would Baruch be good for undergra?
Btw, taxguy, we live in the same town ;-)

I can’t comment on the Quant program at Baruch. I do know that they have a well regarded accounting program though. I would imagine that no business program there is weak.

Euroazn, you live in Rockville? Which high school do you attend? My kids attended Wootton.

Hahahaha Wootton as well :stuck_out_tongue:
Mind PMing me an email address or something (I would greatly appreciate it!)

I don’t know about the undergrad program, but I’ve heard that their MFE (Masters in Financial Engineering) program is well-regarded. Last year’s QuantNet rankings had Baruch’s MFE program ranked 6th.

If you are thinking about accounting or the " Big Four" you might want to look at some of the online articles that tell the truth about accounting.“26 Things You Should Know Before Working For a National Accounting Firm” by David Satava, and “Why Accounting Practitioners and Educators Would Not Major In accounting Again”,by W. Steve Albrecht/Robert J. Sack are two interesting articles.Another good source for true information about the accounting profession are the job forums I think indeed.com (or similar name) holds alot of information.Basically ,colleges exaggerate job prospects and starting salaries to get candidates interested(it is that way in other disciplies ,such as nursing ,as well.)Then after the colleges have made their money ,there is a glut of professionals so that companies can pay less in starting salaries, they can also treat workers poorly knowing there are lots of eager replacements. In addition, when your salary gets high enough they can and will replace you with cheaper labor. They call it " burn and churn".Again, as the articles and the forums suggested the hours and turnover in accounting are horrendous,it is a thankless task just be warned.
one who knows

I’m glad that this thread has more than 5000 views, which means that Baruch college is becoming more popular.

Baruch is famous in New York City. But that’s enough. People who attend Baruch are mostly New York residents.

BTW, copies, please stop ■■■■■■■■. I report you already.

“Baruch has the largest number of candidates in the nation who sat for the exam. In the category of candidates with advanced degrees who took and passed all sections, Baruch was ranked number five in the pass rate (76.5%), following Brigham Young, University of Washington, University of Houston (University Park), and Texas A&M.
