Curious about VP nominations

This is just something I’ve been curious about, and haven’t been able to find any hard data on, so I thought I’d ask here.

My DS is eligible for 4 nominations, 3 MOCs and the US VP. DS has all 3 MOC nominations, which is great because I cannot fathom what might go into the awarding of a VP nomination.

From across the country, so many prospects must apply, that if the VP nominations were awarded to say the top five prospects from across America it would seem like quite likely that the top prospects probably already have at least one MOC nomination, so aside from granting them just one more nomination, are there any specific criteria that the VP nomination uses to perhaps broaden out to those prospects who might not normally get a MOC, ROTC, or Presidential nomination, which seem to have a more defined criteria for selection.

Or perhaps do the academies weigh different nomination sources differently, so a VP one carries more impact?

Anyone have knowledge about VP noms, or experience with someone who got one?

Again, it won’t change anything for my DS but I’m still curious.

Thanks in advance,
RLTW

RLTW, I think you have answered your own question. I am sure that WP is very similiar to USNA where VP noms are offered to those who, though highly qualified, somehow have fallen through the crack in the normal nomination process. You will probably never see a candidate who has two or more legitimate nominations, with one of them being a VP.
