im new to cc, but i have been lurking around this site for some days.

well, lately ive been looking into Brown, and it seems like a very good fit for me. there are, however, some questions i would like to ask.

–I understand that theres the pass/fail system, but would taking classes pass/fail give a bad impression if u are applying to med schools?

–How’s the introductory chem and bio classes? How’s the advanced chem and bio classes? How are the professors who teach those subjects?

–Are the winters bearable? I live in texas, so i have no idea what cold weather is =].

–lastly, if you know about Rice University, can you maybe compare Rice and Brown in terms of academics and lifestyle?

Hey mfs, I'm also from TX and I was in the same situation as you.
-As far the pass/fail system goes, the main point of it I think is to encourage you to take classes you normally wouldn't take. I don't think taking important pre-med classes pass/fail would look good for med school.
-From my invterview, the alumn said that the bio classes were like those at most other highly competive schools; diffficult, large intro classes to weed out the slackers and small, close advanced classes.
-I went up to visit Brown this summer and the weather, at least in the summer, was awesome. In Fort Worth, we're get the numerous 100+ days in the summer so I liked the weather there, and I want to see snow. From what I hear, the coastal location makes the weather not as cold as it is in some of the other New England schools.
-I was looking at Rice as well when I was applying to schools. I went with Brown ED because it seemed that Brown had more national appeal academically while Rice is more of a Texas school. I didn't stay in New England very long, but Texas is definently more conservative and I wanted to try a change of scenery.
