How hard is it to get at least 3.5 GPA in freshman year at Rochester with a biology major? And is it very difficult to register for classes such as intro bio and chemistry in freshmen year? or are these classes available to every freshmen who want to take them? Thank you for your help!

There is plenty of room in the intro level bio and chem classes. You will not have any difficulty registering for either of them. Both are large lecture classes with lots of seats. You will also have no issues getting bio and chem labs and recitations, although you may not be able to schedule them at the times you prefer.

I will mention that UR has 2 different intro bio classes: 110 and 112. For Bio112, it is STRONGLY recommended/required that you have completed AP Bio in high school and earned at least a 4 on the AP exam. In both 112 and 110 many students will have had AP Bio in high school.

How difficult is it to get a 3.5? It’s going to depend on you, your preparation, your study habits, your ability in the discipline, etc. It’s certainly not impossible to do. However, gen chem and both intro bios are large classes (think 300+ students) and the course is graded on a curve. I believe the curve is centered at a C+ with no more than 15% of the class earning A/ A-.
