CURRENT CAL STUDENTS- Rowdy groups

My mom was telling me about her days in the USC band and all their crazy stunts and camaderie. I'm looking for the Cal groups/organizations that are known on campus (or you guys have had experience with) as being fun, rowdy, out to have a good time and bend the rules a little. Any ideas?

The Cal band, definetly....

Rally committee? Certain parites within the Greek system?

If you're more conservative and into sports, the Greek system definitely. If you're a bit crunchier, some of the Co-ops are waaaayyyy rowdy. Three words: the Lothlorein Food Orgy...

5-6 fraternities are pretty rowdy (i've heard some of the co-ops are but i dont have any experience with them)

cal ski and snowboard club (they're pretty crazy at most schools)

Here's an endorsement of the Cal rally committee, and one for your mom, misspicaroon: ;)

ahhhhahahaha ok that's exactly what I was looking for....and I can't play an instrument or snowboard so it's good to know I can just jump in with the rally committee for a good time. very amused...

That prank was classic!!! :)

There are a lot of groups on campus to pick and choose from, they range from rowdy to sedate. Ultimately you will form several social networks on campus and build many lifelong friendships. I actually just got off the phone with my Australian buddy and his wife that he met at Cal.

PS: you'll learn to snowboard, lots of ski trips from Cal. Tahoe is gorgeous and has great slopes. The lift passes are a splurge, but usually people pile up into cabins and split gas fare. Fun times! You should also check out Cal Sailing Club, a very cheap and accessible way to learn to sail and windsurf, just down the Berkeley Marina. There is a big rock climbing contingent too, they are a very tight and outgoing bunch. There is a big indoor facility in west Berkeley where they hang out and they go on trips almost every weekend.

I'm going to join the Cal Sailing Club next year! Never tried rock climbing before, I want to though, but no idea where this club is or meets!

can you join these snowboarding/rockclimbing/windsurfing clubs if you don't know how to do those things? do they teach you or are they mainly for people who are already comfortable with the sport?

i've always been interested in extreme sports but growing up in sheltered suburbia with overprotective parents doesn't really lend itself to much experimentation. :)

Heck yes. Heck yes. Not sure.

But she only asked two questions, drab.

Hmm. I read "Can people who don't know join," "Do they teach," "are most people familiar." You're right, the last one was an "or." shrug

Wow they really teach? Must join!!!

At the sailing club, it's free unlimited windsurfing/sailing classes with yuor semester pass. Rockclimbing classes through Cal Adventures. Snowboard classes in tahoe.

Eh, y'all don't know rowdy until you've been in a German or Irish bar. Berkeley would be a smoking crater of fun if that was encouraged. Which is why I shall do so now! Rowdy, loud, and backslapping is a lot of fun, and mos definitely, Fraternities/Sororities, the Co-ops, if you are indeed of the crunchier variety, or one of the sports clubs are the way to go. I'll know we've made good progress when I hear drunken students marching down the street singing "Whiskey in the Jar."

CalX, I was thinking about the Cal Sailing Sports Club.

That's always fun. Once you get the hang of sailing, you can sign up to go out with local skippers, they always need hands on board, there are more boat owners than sailors around. You can also rent sailboats in places like Sausalito (about $30/person /day) with a group of friends and sail in the bay and under the GG if you become good. Great times.

Other great thing to do at Cal Sailing: learn to windsurf. Then try kiteboarding in Alameda (great conditions there), or windsurf in Del Valle lake in Livermore (hot weather, warmer clean water, and some wineries there to boot.)

Can't wait until next year! I'm not involved in ECs as much as I had wanted this year.

these are great suggestions...i fully intend to do as many as possible
